[solved] software mixing not working

I'm trying to install Archlinux on a Lenovo Thinkpad L440 laptop, but I'm having problems with getting software mixing to work. Usually dmix works out of the box, or only requires a user to be added to the audio group, but I keep getting resource/device busy and permissions error messages.

Here's the output of some audio diagnostics I've ran:

# cat /etc/asound.conf
pcm.!default {
	type plug
	slave.pcm {
		type hw
		card 1
	}
}
ctl.!default {
	type hw
	card 1
}

# speaker-test
speaker-test 1.0.27.2

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 1 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Playback open error: -16,Device or resource busy

Re: [solved] software mixing not working

As I understand sound works but software mixing don't. What desktop are you using? What happen if you delete /etc/asound.conf, reboot to be sure everything is reset, ensure your sound card is unmuted (alsamixer)? It should work out of the box, with no configuration whatsoever if ALSA is used. If you use pulseaudio, I can't tell you.

Re: [solved] software mixing not working

There is no dmix set up in that asound.conf, so it's normal that you have no mixing. Remove that asound.conf and use this instead: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p1344743

There is no dmix in my asound.state either. Sofware mixing should come by default with no asound.state. You don't need top configure anything to enable it. I agree further debugging on some sort might be necessary but don't suggest complicate configuration to do. Software mixing should come by default without any configuration.

Oh no it doesn't. Might work for you if you're only running stereo, but try opening stereo and then attempt to open 5.1 while stereo is playing, and of course the 5.1 fails to open. This is fixed by the config in my sig, since years ago.

It does (well, except the scenario brebs points out), and you're right there's no asound.conf needed. But ringulreith wrote one in an attempt to change the default sound device, and in doing so he took dmix out of the picture. So I linked to a different method of setting the default sound device, a method that does not mess with the dmix setup.

Re: [solved] software mixing not working

Thank you, Gusar. I finally got sound working properly using the method you recommended. The only caviat was that I needed to add my user account to the audio group as well.
