[SOLVED] Pulseaudio default sound card problem

Hi all, pulseaudio seems to refuse to set the default sound card following the instructions in the wiki here. When I enter pulseaudio -k then pulseaudio --start I get this message back:

E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Daemon startup failed.

This is my aplay -l output

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: CX20584 Analog [CX20584 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

and so I appended this to my /etc/pulse/default.pa file

load-module module-alsa-sink device=hw:1,0

and also this

set-default-sink 1

These should be correct judging from the output from pacmd list-sinks:

2 sink(s) available.

EDIT: Instead of trying to set the default card through pulseaudio I instead followed the ALSA instructions here and now things work the way I want them to. For those curious this is my config at /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

options snd slots=snd_hda_intel
options snd_hda_intel index=1

which I derived from the output of cat /proc/asound/modules which gave:

0 snd_hda_intel
1 snd_hda_intel
