Hi
Since WinXP is not supported anymore, and several people already asked me about alternatives. I have suggested to try using Linux, otherwise it's time to shop for another great software from Microsoft. However, those willing to replace winXP with Linux will definitely have questions.
Anyway, from time to time these people (around 7), are asking to help with PC/laptop issues (usually, software etc..). I've been using TeamViewer to access their desktop behind NAT or dynamic IP. I'm currently running home server which can be accessed via internet using domain. I would like to know if there's an alternative to TeamViewer, where I could set up my own server for desktop (windows and linux) clients to call in so that with admin (server) application I could log into their computer? Teamviewer is a great application for my requirements, but in these spying, unsecured times I think diversification from main servers makes a small step towards privacy.
Of course, it would be great, if one could just download application from my server and have all configs ready to use my server, but clients that would require configuration would also work.
p.s. I'm not a paid linux administrator, but willing to learn stuff. My mother-in-law has arch running at home - but since she has static IP, I have no problem to access it through ssh or x2go with router forwarding ssh to lan ip.

I think you might find the search phrase "SSH reverse tunnel port forward" interesting. It will certainly give you a starting point

Looks quite cool. But is it possible to tunnel the communication through ssh?
