i915 slow

I've got the i915 chipset working with the instructions from the wiki, but every time I run glx gears I get an error that says:

Unrecognized deviceID 2592

Not sure if it's related, but my fps is around 200 using the 24bit depth.  It used to be close to 500 on Ubuntu.

Here is my xorg.conf:

Re: i915 slow

I use MOD_AUTOLOAD="yes" in rc.conf and only i915 is loaded. I had problems (dri not working) when both i915 and i810 were loaded. I am not sure what depth I am actually using but I get 1200FPS in glxgears. If you want, I could PM you my xorg.conf.

Re: i915 slow

By default i810 was not loaded so I did it manually to see if it would improve my speed.  It didn't.  If you would please PM me that xorg.conf I would really appreciate it!

Re: i915 slow

My fps is still stuck around 250.. looking at some output I see something that says:

(EE) I810(0): [dri] DRI ScreenInit failed.  Disabling DRI.

Any idea why that would be occuring?  I'm using the same xorg.conf that Snowman posted above.

edit: I think this is due to an outdated xorg in current.

Re: i915 slow

Do you have other error message in Xorg.log?
Are you in the video group?
Make sure the i810 module is not loaded.

Re: i915 slow

I'm in the video group and I've tried it both with and without i810 loaded.  The only other suspicious thing I can see is

(WW) I810: No matching Device section found for instance (BusID PCI:0:2:1) found

I also tried a few other xorg.conf files I scoured from google but am consistently getting the DRI error even when other people report their xorg fixing their issue. e.g. adding the load DRM option to xorg.conf does not help and explicitly loading DRI in the modules section adds an error that says something along the lines of no DRI module found.

Re: i915 slow

You could try:
$ glxinfo |grep rendering
to see if dri is working. It will probably say no.

You could try:
$ ls -lR /dev/* |grep video
to see if the devices are created. I get :
crw-rw----  1 root video 226, 1 Feb  3 13:32 card1
crw-rw----  1 root video 29, 0 Feb  3 08:31 0
crw-rw----  1 root video 10, 175 Feb  3 13:32 agpgart

You could also try to google for the error message you got ((EE) I810(0): [dri] DRI ScreenInit failed. Disabling DRI. )

Are you using testing repo?

Re: i915 slow

I'm not using the testing repo... should I?

The grep output is:

crw-rw----  1 root video 29, 0 2006-02-06 08:02 0
crw-rw----  1 root video 10, 175 2006-02-06 13:02 agpgart

should I manually create the missing directories? edit: would it make a difference that I am using the CK kernel?

glxinfo definitely shows no dri..

I had googled the dri init error but it seems it can be caused by bunches of things.  The nearest I gathered was that something was not right with xorg itself since I found some conf files where it supposedly solved the issue for other people but did not help me..

I'm not using the testing repo either. I asked to make sure that the problem is not caused by a package from testing.

edit: would it make a difference that I am using the CK kernel?

I have a dri directory in /dev:

ls -l /dev/dri/
total 0
crw-rw-rw-  1 root root  226, 0 Feb  3 13:32 card0
crw-rw----  1 root video 226, 1 Feb  3 13:32 card1

This is supposed to be created automatically by udev. Try using the stock kernel. If your CK kernel is missing a module (built-in or seperate), it could explain why udev doesn't create the device.

I tried the stock kernel but I get the same output from ls -lR | grep video  FWIW I also have a dri directory but there is nothing in it. ?!

Based on Alethos' post I went ahead and upgraded to xorg7 in testing.  Now getting 1000+ fps so it seems to be working.  So it seems the issue with me ended up being the xorg in current.

Did you install the snapshot from dri.freedesktop.org or keep the original modules ?

I guess I kept the original modules because I don't know how to "install a snapshot" as you say. I am quite the noob.

Re: i915 slow

This is what you do.

you have to load the agpgart module first, so add agpgart first in the modules section in rc.conf, then intel_agp then i915.

I havent either gotten dri to work yet either but now when I dmesg | grep dri I get that it is properly initialized.

let me know what happens.

Ok, now I have dri working, getting 1200fps. I just had mode 666 instead of 0666 in xorg.conf...

Just do as I told you and it should be fixed.

Re: i915 slow

Try changing the i915 in your xorg.conf to i810.  I know it seems weird, but that's just the way it is..

Re: i915 slow

Oops.. sorry I'm way in East Asia and it's late. Should have paid closer attention. :oops:

Which version of xorg are you using?  I had problems with 6.8.x and needed v7.0 to get accelerated.

Re: i915 slow

Yes, thats true I am using xorg 7.0, another thing is that I get 1200-1300 fps when I have 16 color default, you had 24 colors.

with 24 colors I get 830fps.
and you should really clean out your xorg.conf.. here is mine

Re: i915 slow

Your rc.conf is wrong. You need to comment them out to prevent them to be loaded in the wrong order then add them in the right order:

MOD_AUTOLOAD="yes"
MODULES=(!agpgart !intel_agp !i915 agpgart intel_agp i915 ...)

My xorg.conf is here:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=19329

Ironically, after helping out viniosity, I got that slow down. Upgrading to xorg7 didn't fixed it. It's only recently that I found out that the speed was back to normal (~1060 FPS). So make sure your system is up-to-date.
