Ok, in case anyone had the same problem like me with the invisible windows here is my solution:

I did reset all the desktop-effects settings in dconf-editor in org->cinnamon to the default values, now the windows are visible again on start.

yup that was it, I've got my beloved cinnamon back <3
but the effects ... sx0r

ok the issue is fade and none. scale works. fade and none doesn't. on "Mapping windows:"

If you are referring to grey screen after login (and you use mdm as display manager), there is just this workaround atm:

Remove mdm from startup:

# systemctl disable mdm

Then create a new ~/.xinitrc with the following content

#!/bin/bash
exec cinnamon-session-cinnamon

Now you can start cinnamon with

$ startx

So far the mdm repo maintainer has not responded to the issue.

Re: [Cinnamon] Issues after update to Cinnamon 2.2 and GTK 3.12

I have a feeling that it's related to changes in pam rules... look here: https://github.com/linuxmint/mdm/issues/32

what's in /etc/pam.d/mdm now:

#%PAM-1.0
auth include system-login
-auth optional pam_gnome_keyring.so
account include system-login
password include system-login
session include system-login
-session optional pam_gnome_keyring.so auto_start

what's suggested on the github issue tracker:

#%PAM-1.0
auth requisite pam_nologin.so
auth required pam_env.so
auth required pam_unix.so
-auth optional pam_gnome_keyring.so
account required pam_unix.so
session required pam_limits.so
session required pam_unix.so
password required pam_unix.so

-session required pam_loginuid.so
-session optional pam_systemd.so
-session optional pam_gnome_keyring.so auto_start

I'm going to give it a try in a bit and I'll report back

Re: [Cinnamon] Issues after update to Cinnamon 2.2 and GTK 3.12

Beside the delay I have notice that System Tray icons fail to appear when first added in a session. They only appear if I restart Cinnamon or reset settings to default.
Looking glass error logs show the icons being added to the systray and nothing more.

cinnamon 2.2-3
cinnamon-control-center 2.2.3-1
cinnamon-desktop 2.2.0-1
cinnammon-menues 2.2.0-1
cinnamon-screensaver 2.2.0-1
cinnamon-session 2.2.0-2
cinnamon-settings-daemon 2.2.1-1
cinnamon-translations 2.2.0-1

I can confirm that my CPU usage is also very high while locked. When I unlock I notice that my CPU temperatures are abnormally high. Should we file a bug report, and where?

I'll need to look at the temperatures, but as I've all ready said, I do have the CPU usage at around 50%.

If you do report it, report it against the cinnamon-screensaver package (make sure the report title includes [cinnamon-screensaver]).

Intel, ATI or Nvidia?  I'm running dual display, so I'm trying to track down where my problem lies.  I'm seriously considering a fresh install to see if it fixes the problem, but if it doesn't then I'll be left without a working GUI.  And I WILL NOT GO TO GNOME.

Madscience have you tried lightdm in place of mdm works for me while a test of mdm gives me a grey screen.

I've tried startx, and it does work, although my panel icons are all resized randomly.

AMD 3305M APU with AMD Radeon 6480G Graphics, using the catalyst-test package from the AUR.

Haha, GNOME3 hates my graphics chip with a passion.

Using LightDM is sound advice I think. You might as well try.

I'm giving it a try, but I'm partial to my MDM theme... silly as that sounds.

EDIT:  Apparently it's an issue with my cinnamon theme

So I've reverted back to 2.0 until some of the issues are sorted out... I guess they'll have everything working when mint 17 is ready...

open up panel from the System Settings and check the "Use customized panel size..." and "Allow Cinnamon to scale panel text" boxes. That fixes it for me.

I fixed that by replacing the applets.js from another theme's cinnamon.css , but I was getting a lot of disk thrashing and soft lockups. I'll wait a week and see where it's at smile  fwiw I don't like the direction GTK is heading, but I don't like QT so I guess mate or xfce might be in my future.
