I was just about to watch some stupid flash video with good old opera (12.16.1860-1), others worked fine just minutes before.
X froze, after some time nouveau switched to fbcon, most gui processes were gone, hang on reboot

Oh oh, I get the feeling it is the same crap as last time. Die libvdpau went back into the nouveau-dri package. Workaround would be to delete or move it. I'm not sure if I can test it now.
EDIT: In a quick test videos are working again after deleting libvdpau_nouveau. I probably don't have the time for exhaustive testing.

After updating from nouveau-dri-9.2.4-1 to nouveau-dri-10.0.1-1 I also experience the same crash with a GeForce NVIDIA NV43 graphics card.

dmesg is showing "nouveau E[  PGRAPH][0000:01:00.0]  ERROR nsource: LIMIT_ZETA nstatus: BAD_ARGUMENT PROTECTION_FAULT" and x server is crashing.

I had to revert mesa, mesa-libgl and nouveau-dri to 9.2.4-1 to get youtube videos working again.

Sorry to dig this out, but i just ran exactly into the same problem using a 7600GT. Reverting the appropriate libraries to 9.2.4 lead to a segfault in Compiz, deleting the libvdpau_nouveau files, however worked perfectly - thanks cro for the hint. But I guess, this is not a permanent solution, is there a better way to fix it? Maybe a bug report mentioning the problem would be of some use?
