Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Tarballs are retrievable and available, but written before mesa update. You can easily copy-paste lib[gl,egl, gles] symlinks from ie. newest catalyst-test PKGBUILD, or you can let me know which PKGBUILD you wish me to update for you.

Anyone having problem with recent gdm 3.12 not starting after upgrade? It seems to be catalyst related.
I'm running catalust repo.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

hmm works fine here (gnome-shell 3.12.0-1). I got only one screen, maybe you have more than one?
edit: oh wait, gdm, right, let me check tongue
Ah yes, gdm segfault.
kdm works fine, compositing even on gnome side works fine, probably gdm bug?
Edit: could it be related with "gnome on wayland"? (i know it shouldn't)

Probably a gdm bug, it seems catalyst related though.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I'm also having issues with the latest Catalyst (using catalyst-test from the AUR) and GDM, with the same errors shown by costil.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

yeah same here - just disabled it meanwhile and I'm starting xfce manually now. Btw: pacman -Syu running right now and I'm seeing lots of gnome updates - gdm included - I'll report back in a minute if it's still there

edit: hrm still the same. would've been too easy big_smile

It is my bug report and I do not think so. It is more likely GDM's bug., but I have not checked out GDM's sources yet... The fact is if GDM runs correctly on all other drivers that does not explicitly mean it is Catalyst's fault.

Everything GNOME 3.6+ has always hated both my AMD Radeon 6480G and Intel HD Graphics 3000 (different rigs), regardless of Open Source vs. Proprietary drivers, despite supposedly being more than capable of running GNOME and all of its components. I'm having enough fun time dealing with Cinnamon, fixing those problems and my AUR kernel packages, so I'm not going to look into GNOME 3.12 for now. In any event, I think it's GNOME, not Catalyst based on previous experience.

even with the segfault tracing back to the driver, huh. could GDM cause a segfault in a properly written driver? I don't know much about their interaction.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

A heads up for the users of the legacy driver. Recently I began experiencing this, so I gave another chance to the open drivers with linux 3.14, to see if this other issue had been solved. At least for my case (Mobility HD3470) the switch to the radeon driver solved the first problem, and with kernel 3.14 the second problem seems to be gone as well. I have to say that with working dpm the user experience is much better than with catalyst legacy, finally I can play fullscreen videos on youtube without killing my battery in half a hour. I suggest the users of catalyst legacy to try radeon with linux 3.14, it might finally work as it should...

Although FGLRX figures there that does not mean the problem lies there. It still does not seem to me as a problem in the Catalyst, but rather than a bug in X server. I am not going to claim that Catalyst is a great driver, but as far as I see, the problem lies somewhere else.

On my system with HD6450, fglrx and gdm 3.12 the log looks suspiciously similar. I downgraded gdm to 3.10 and now it boots again.

My GDM is also crashing. Here is the full log from a startup where GDM failed to start: http://sprunge.us/hVIK
Downgrading GDM worked.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Kind of unrelated question: Do I need amdapp-sdk? I have it installed for some reason, I think something to do with drivers, but I want to trim down the size of installed packages, and this one is one of the biggest.

I think I don't need it, but I want to be sure.

I do not have it on my system. Sounds like a Software Development Kit. Do you develop 3D programs? Otherwise just uninstall it.

Back to the GDM problem: Jan de Groot closed a bug for [gdm], saying it is a catalyst issue …
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/39921

Is anyone looking into this right now? Should we open a separate thread to collect more data and logs?

I've been waiting for this driver, it's finally fixing " Poor performance of AMD 2D Acceleration Architecture on R9 290X" bug smile.
Plus it has full opengl 4.4 support

I've updated catalyst-test and catalyst-test-pxp @ AUR, I will update [catalyst] repo tomorrow.

Im running steam not that often, but is it just me or Loading time is much longer (especially in dota2 or l4d2)?
BTW: gdm works in same way (segfault) with this new driver

I don't know about Dota2, but L4D2 had always long loading times, even on Windows.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I just installed Arch and I'm wondering if I should be using the Catalyst or Radeon drivers with my 6670. I installed catalyst but it seems to freeze as soon as I finish loading the map in dota 2 (only game I've tested so far) and shows some weird stretched images as soon as I open dota 2 (just for a second though). I'm using xorg 1.14.5 with awesome 3.5.5.

Have you installed catalyst from Vi0l0's repo? Stable or beta? Latest beta supports xorg-server 1.15.1-1 so I'd recommend using that. I don't know about the open driver's performance but it's getting much better recently. If I remember, some people posted statements regarding it's performance with the HD 6xxx series a few pages ago.

Also, which packages did you install? For Dota you'll need the multilib repo (search the wiki on that) if you're on 64bit arch and install the 32bit packages of catalyst in addition to the 64bit ones:
lib32-catalyst-libgl lib32-catalyst-utils lib32-opencl-catalyst
You probably don't need opencl but I'm not sure and having it installed doesn't hurt.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hm, 14.4 RC fixed several things for me: Unity games work now, as they should, the silly vlc bug is gone. But Metro: Last Light still freezes my pc. :-/ But I have a feeling, AMD takes this page seriously --> http://devgurus.amd.com/community/steam-linux because so far, they fixed nearly everything, I reported.
