Re: Gnome 3.12 Beta

I have a Radeon 6950 and the Open Source ati drivers are flawless on my system, albeit not quite the framerates as their proprietary counterpart. I do not know why your system is having such bad luck with drivers, however if you have not tried using the linux 3.13/14 kernels which had enormous graphics upgrades for AMD chips, I would try it.

So I commented this line out from /usr/bin/powerdown:

This seems to have improved things a little. I also have this in my /etc/X11/xorg.confd.d/20-intel.conf:

   Driver "intel"
   Option "AccelMethod" "glamor"

but I'll be testing my theory without it in a bit.

Did you find "glamor" better than "sna" ?

Still no dice, even with those kernels.

I assume you know this. But just in case, when you remove fglrx, you have to install mesa, xf86-video-ati, the lib32 files, and also rename the xorg.conf file to something else so it doesn't get loaded. You also have to remove the "nomodeset" option from /etc/default/grub boot option (as fglrx needs that option set, but os drivers break with it)

Glamor definitely makes animations smoother, though there is now slight tearing. Or at least that's what I think it is - i'm not sure I have the correct terminology. Performance seems to degrade over time no matter what acceleration method or frequency governor I use though.

Image tearing  has been a problem for me since I got away from Compiz (have always used the proprietary drivers for nvidia). The funny thing is that now that I am up an running again I have had zero problems with it. I did notice that the driver was updated along with gnome 3.12

I notice a similar behavior when I switch to Glamor.

Re: Gnome 3.12 Beta

I am having issues with GTK icon themes since the update. I use Moka and the icons are not loaded anymore.
I only get the default gnome icons. Anyone else having the issue?
I tried using gnome-tweak-tool and dconf-editor. Nothing in the logs.

Re: Gnome 3.12 Beta

OK so after some investigations, I'm pretty sure the problem I'm having icons is more general than that.

sudo dmesg | grep segfault
[ 18.312513] gnome-settings-[697]: segfault at 0 ip 00007f30937f9d41 sp 00007ffffadcab70 error 4 in libmedia-keys.so[7f30937ea000+3400
[ 18.552515] gnome-settings-[761]: segfault at 0 ip 00007fb48d04dd41 sp 00007fff0c7e7360 error 4 in libmedia-keys.so[7fb48d03e000+3400

So gnome-settings-daemon is crashing because of a bug in libmedia-keys.so. I'm not sure how to debug it though.
This might also explain why my Fn key on my laptop is not behaving properly (no more Mute, Sound up, Sound down, ...)

Re: Gnome 3.12 Beta

OK so I was right, gnome-settings-daemon crashing was the issue.

I reset the media keys and it's much better now:

gsettings reset-recursively org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.media-keys

I am also impressed by how fast this makes UI more responsive. I was not experiencing any tearing with SNA but this simple change makes the Intel Acceleration much more fluid. Thanks for the tip, it should probably be added to the wiki page.

Re: Gnome 3.12 Beta

I'm not sure if this is the right thread, but I just upgraded to gnome 3.12 and now neither gdm nor gnome will start for me.  I am using the packages in extra.  Is anyone else having the same problem, in which  you get a sad face with the message "A problem has occurred and the system can't recmver"  Is anyone else seeing the same thing?

slightly more spceifically:
- GDM fails to start, giving me this error window
- under lightdm, gnome also fails to start, giving me the same or similar failure windows fullscreen.
- under lightdm, I am able to start xfce.

journctl -u gdm is long and shows the following error:

May 01 15:40:24 osskil gdm[881]: Failed to give slave programs access to the display. Trying to proceed.

there's also a fair bit of xorg related logging, with some warnings but nothing looks immediately fatal there.  Any suggestions?  Thanks,

Matt

pacman -Syu did end up solving the problem for me -- there were multiple dependency issues so it took me a while to figure that out.  thanks though!

OMG, I can say exactly the same thing, I didn't have any tearing but the framerate was slow. I was wondering why kwin and compiz looked much more smooth than Gnome Shell. Setting cpupower to 'performance' increased the framerate a bit, but I still felt that it could be improved. I tried many things, but that post was the real solution.

So, let me share what I tried, so you can know what NOT to do: I have an Nvidia Geforce card with proprietary drivers and bumblebee installed. I though that writing 'exec optirun gnome-session' in my .xinitrc file would be a good idea. Well, when I typed startx gnome shell looked very fluid with a very high frame rate, but CPU usage was doubled, and my laptop temperature increased 20°C. Well, it was worth a try...

Re: Gnome 3.12 Beta

Since upgrading to Gnome 3.12, login to gnome is broken intermittenty. About 90% of the time login from GDM and from an open locked session - fails. About 10% of the time it works, inexplicably. This happens both on GDM as well as manually startx'ing a gnome-session, and also upon returning from lock screen.

None of the logs, or journalctl, show anything relevant. Any ideas?

Good choice. I use Gnome Mplayer. And I guess with gnome 3.12 I will stop using Totem/Video. I used it for Audiobooks, but without the playlist view, it's nearly useless for me now. Also, I have to say that I don't see much improvements in this release. Rhythmbox as example is still unable to readd deleted podcast episodes. -.-

Thanks to whoever made the revamp decisions for Totem, now it is on par with the rest of Gnome 3.

UGLY, CONFUSING AND USELESS!

None of the buttons has any explanation to its functionality, the plus button (whatever function it is supposed to have) never worked for me on 3 different machines, I never managed to understand what the F* is the tick button for, playlist? Can't be, because there is no play list pane any more. And there is no open file options... And who the hell decided that there should always be a title bar displaying "Videos" button in full screen mode?!

5 minutes into totem 3.12, I purged it, and continued with VLC.

The only thing that totem is doing better than the rest of the gnome 3 is that there is no extension to fix it, great job!

I am using Cinnamon 2.2 by the way, also tried this in gnome 3.12, without any difference.

For gnome-shell-system-monitor-applet from mgalgs
Temporary 3.12 instructions until official support is merged: $ cd /path/to/source $ git fetch origin pull/242/head && git checkout FETCH_HEAD Then `Alt-F2 r` to restart the shell.
