Re: ArchLinux freeze randomly

I have intel graphics too. I don't get the hard locks, but I do get soft locks sometimes (seems to happen at random when i try to suspend my laptop by closing the lid. it doesn't suspend, is nearly completely unresponsive, but eventually I can switch to a tty and shut down).

This seemed to fix it for me: adding options drm_kms_helper poll=0 to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf

apparently I was suffering a livelock from an irq storm. I'm not sure if its the same issue any of you guys are having but I guess it could be worth a shot. I'm using kernel 3.10.10 with intel hd4000 graphics.

Re: ArchLinux freeze randomly

There certainly is a kernel bug from at least 3.10.6 to 3.10.10 related to broadcom WiFi cards (see this post).
I am therefore currently running 3.10.3, until 3.10.11 or 3.11 is in [core] (where it is supposedly fixed).

Ledti's logs seemed scaringly familiar to me, so I thought perhaps this might be of interest.

Re: ArchLinux freeze randomly

For me blacklisting mei_me module solves the freezing.

I'm actually able to reproduce my soft lock issue with a 3.11 kernel, so it's probably unrelated to that bug. Though I haven't tried with a 3.11.1 kernel. It's really the hard lock that bothers me as it's basically one of those things you just gotta hope stops happening one day.

Edit: I ended up reporting my soft lock issue since I could reproduce it on two computers. It seems to be related to i3 as far as I can tell.

Re: ArchLinux freeze randomly

Anyone still having hard locks with 3.14?

I have hard locks after a random period of time (between 2 minutes and 2 days after boot, usually around a couple of hours).

This is a Sandy Bridge laptop with KDE and PulseAudio installed, blacklisted XHCI (xhci_hcd) due to buggy Fresco Logic USB3 controller, bbswitch for NVIDIA Optimus (always off).
Linux u36sg-arch 3.14.1-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Apr 14 20:40:47 CEST 2014 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I've been having the problem since at least 3.13.
From 3.11 to 3.12 I wasn't using Arch so I dunno the state of it, but around 3.10 I was and there were some hard locks.

This is an old thread that does not seem to have a common root cause.  I am going to go ahead and close this thread.  Igordcard, feel free to start a new thread, and if you feel this thread is appropriate, go ahead and link back to this one.  Not all lock ups and kernel panics are created equal.
