[SOLVED] Black screen after disk check > 3.13.8-1 upgrade

EDIT: fixed adding nomodeset to /etc/default/grub
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet nomodeset"

When upgrading to anything > 3.13.8 the screen works normally untill the disk check message then the screen flickers with the disk check message at the top for a few seconds then goes blank. I can then blind restart the system. Downgrading to 3.13.8-1 and problem goes away.

Not sure where to start with this kind of stuff

Dell ATI video card - xf86-video-ati

Looks like an ATI regression. I don't think that disabling kms is a good idea, unless you happen to be using fglrx.

Im not using fglrx

I do get some whining about UMS being unsuported in xf86-video-ati or something along those lines but I can see my screen.

Should I just downgrade to a a suitable kernal and wait for a fix? Im not sure what to do.

No KMS also implies no DRI. Videoplayback should also be sluggish, let alone games.

This is a long shot, but my machine did this after a recent update. The screen brightness got "reset" somehow and it was black. I just used the Fn/Key combination to increase the brightness and it worked fine. I had to do that on every boot for a few days, but some other update must have fixed it -- because it doesn't happen any more.

Again, this is a loooooong shot, but it's a simple thing to try.
