Booting with 3.14.* results in unexpected shutdown

Problem description: Computer boots normally up until the moment before NVIDIA splash and entering login screen (quiet disabled shows no errors), but upon trying to do so suffers abrupt shutdown.
Some cases the computer screen goes blank, followed by a short period of nothing until the fans start running at max.

Adding "acpi=off"  to GRUB stops both above-mentioned events, instead the boot processs is simply halted at the same point with screen not being cleared and nothing else happening.
The computer is an ASUS G55VW laptop, Intel i7 CPU, NVIDIA GTX660M (without Optimus).
I'm running the stock kernel and the problem has persisted with all core versions of 3.14.* Downgrading NVIDIA from 337.* to 334.* has had no effect (337 depends on >3.14)

Help greatly appreciated! Tried searching for a similar issue, or just something related, but none seems to exist that I could find.
I'm completely stumped, good thing downgrading is such a breeze!

There are actually a couple of other topics about this issue. If you are looking for an answer as to what the problem is, then nobody seem to be able to provide an answer. Nvidia claim it is a bug in the kernel acpi calls, but have not been forthcoming to explain that further. There is a lengthy topic on nvidia forums.
