[SOLVED] Make MPD volume independent of ALSA volume?

I've noticed that when I use any client (mpc, ncmpcpp) to change the volume of MPD, it also changes the level of the "PCM" channel in alsamixer. This seems equivalent to the master channel in that it controls the volume of all applications. How can I make the MPD volume independent of the ALSA PCM channel (or at least make sure that apps are not routed through the PCM channel)?
