Disable gain in alsa

My experience is that alsa adds gain to a audio signal, if I dont run audio or video (MPD/MPV) to hw:x,y, the sound is noticably higher. This is annoying when I have adjust the volume when using youtube or spotify to play music instead of MPD for example.

Any idea on how I do that?

EDIT: I am NOT using pulseaudio and will never do that.

Re: Disable gain in alsa

It is a generic usb 2.0 soundcard, using default alsa settings supports no volume controller in alsa, is running MPV and MPD is running through hw:x,y which disables the gain, but for amarok, spotify, flash etc there is some gain added by default of alsa.

Re: Disable gain in alsa

Then run everything by default to hardware through dmix (create your own).
