[SOLVED] Hangs During First Boot

Hi,

I recently am trying to re-install arch linux after i broke it a month ago playing around with updates. I downloaded the latest revision (0501), md5 checksum confirmed it was a clean download, and flashed it to a USB using 'dd', as per the installation guide.

I booted using the USB, which worked properly and selected 64bit and it hanged in the middle of the boot sequence. However, the odd part was it didn't consistently hang in the same place each time I tried it. The following 3 are the most common spots it would hang at (I added debug so I could see more information to the kernel boot command):

1. Starting udev Coldplug all devices...
...
  systemd-udev-trigger.service change dead -> start

2. Starting Journal Service...
...
Starting Remount Root and Kernel File Systems

3. Starting Journal Service...
...
[  OK  ] Reached target Slices.

I tried the 32bit version and it did the same. Also, I successfully installed linux mint earlier this week on the same machine. Any insight would be most helpful. I have no idea at this point since where it hangs seems inconsistent and unrelated. The computer didn't change since the last time I installed arch (~4 months ago).

Jordan.

Maybe try with another usb-stick. Especially if the one you used is an older one.

If I get issues with a USB then I always go back to the good old CD, have you tried that?

Re: [SOLVED] Hangs During First Boot

I tried both the USB I had used for linux mint earlier that week as well as a brand new one and found the same problem occurring. I went and grabbed a CD so I'll try burning one tonight (it's been a bit since i've had to spin up the old burner).

Re: [SOLVED] Hangs During First Boot

So, no luck using a disc. Found the issue though, by disassembling computer. It was due to my graphic card having 2 monitors plugged in.

Moderators, does this qualify as a bug? It shouldn't hang starting up for the first time due to the graphic card mirroring two displays. I'll proceed with install and see if I can plug the second back in upon installation. After that, I'll mark it done.

Re: [SOLVED] Hangs During First Boot

Solved. To re-iterate, this is 3.14.1-1 kernel with a radeon graphic card running dual monitors. When I pulled the second monitor, it would work.

Add the following to the kernel boot: "radeon.dpm=0". See here for a quick read on the issue: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=177561&p=1
