Ah. Yes. I forgot to post something on the forum. As you can read there, we don't know when it will be possible to start again.

No problem, I'm looking forward to the class whenever it happens, thanks for your work. In the meantime we still have the fine wiki. smile

There should be an index of logs of classes. Or is there already one?

Re: Arch Classroom

For those that don't want to click links:

All,

manfred and I have both decided that we are going to finally be having
this class. We'll be doing the first class on Sunday, September 14th at
17:00 UTC.

This first class will be a basic introduction for new packagers on how
to make their PKGBUILDs better. Anyone¹ is welcome to attend. We will be
running our class out of the #archlinux-classroom channel on freenode.
Those wanting a link can go here² for more information.

¹: There are some requirements to attend, you should not be completely
new to Arch. We expect you to know how to use a text editor and basic
Linux utilities (cd, mkdir, install, ln, etc.).

²: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be … aintaining

Thank you, and we hope to see you there!

Re: Arch Classroom

There will be another PKGBUILD class. This time by CalimeroTeknik. From the mailing list,

There will be a class on PKGBUILDs by CalimeroTeknik. It will cover the basics of packaging and how to write a PKGBUILD. Everyone is welcome to attend. The only prerequisite is an interest in the topic.

Here is a list of topics that may be covered. You can vote for those which interest you. The ones with the most votes will get more attention in the class.

Re: Arch Classroom

There will be a new class on the Linux kernel on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at 16:00 UTC in the IRC channel #archlinux-classroom on the Freenode network. If there is enough interest, the class may also be held a second time on that day for people from East Asia and Oceania. If you want the class being held again for those timezones, please reply below indicating so.

The class will be taught by jy2wong and is called, "A First Look at the Linux Kernel". The class will cover the role of kernels in a system, why you might want to consider compiling your own, and tips for not getting lost in the configuration process during your first Linux kernel compile.

Prerequisites: While not necessary, it is useful to be familiar with ABS before taking the class. If you are unfamiliar with PKGBUILDs, logs from past classes make an excellent primer.

About jy2wong in her own words: I'm a university student from Canada, studying/doing research in something involving signal processing (that lies somewhere between math and computers). I've installed Arch Linux on my laptop about 4 times now, and the first 3 times were in my first week of using Arch Linux (that was about 5 years ago). I've been compiling my own kernel for the last 3 or 4 years. I think I'm allergic to cats.

Re: Arch Classroom

That sounds interesting, I don't now how I missed this topic until now! I read all the previous posts but my question wasn't answered there: what is expected of the student? I've never done these things before, so... is it 'passive' (i.e. teacher just talks and we take notes) or are we required to actively take part?

I'm asking because while I am interested in the kernel stuff, I have no prior experience so I would prefer to just passively hang back and suck up all the knowledge big_smile

Re: Arch Classroom

Students are expected to have an interest in the topic and to have fun! The classes are interactive. Feel free to ask questions. It is very much active and not a lecture.

If you are curious how the classes are run, logs from the previous ones are linked to from the Arch Wiki, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Cl … us_Classes. I can't say if future classes will be run exactly like those, but they can give you a general idea of what's expected.

Also, every class ends with a 3 hour test which includes multiple choice sections, two essays, and a section on analogies. tongue
(I'm joking. Please don't think you'll actually have to take an Arch Linux Examination (ALE).)

Re: Arch Classroom

Excellent, I'll read through the previous logs. My biggest concern wasn't that the classes are interactive, but more that they require prior knowledge and/or do "exercises" - which I then could not take part in.

You do your avatar well, by the way. wink

Re: Arch Classroom

I see, that would depend on the class. For most classes, prerequisites will establish a baseline of knowledge. In the case of the kernel class, you don't have to know how to use ABS. It helps to know how to because compiling your own kernel in Arch is best done through that. But the class will still be useful even if you know nothing about ABS.

No, there won't be excercises. wink The class is oriented to many skill levels, including beginners.

Re: Arch Classroom

Will we be able to compile our kernel after this class? If so, shall we do this on Virtual Machine or in our box? I know almost nothing about compiling kernel.
Of course I will see this class, I really like the topic. big_smile

Re: Arch Classroom

Janilson: The ABS method makes compilation (and installation of the resulting compiled kernel) pretty straightforward (I'd say about as hard as compiling and installing anything in the AUR manually). And it's conveniently all on one page in the wiki! I'll spend a bit of time on a guided tour of the linux package PKGBUILD (maybe more time if people have lots of questions about it), but mostly I want to focus on getting people comfortable making decisions about how to configure their kernel (and to do that, you first need to have some idea of what kernels do and their relationship with hardware). That is, I don't want to dwell on the exact procedure for kernel compiling, but you should be able to compile a kernel after this class. If you're running into problems, I'm happy to help during a break or after "class".

You can do this on your own box, yep.

I'm glad to see interest in the topic, both here and on the mailing list smile

Four days ago I gave a talk on packaging basics at Poznań Open Source Event (or whatever a correct translation should look like). I wouldn't mention it as it was in Polish, but I see some small possibility that slides will be useful to someone.
