hi
trying to find if someone else who have same problem, but it is not easy.
here is my situation:
Looks that randomly system {my gonme enviroment} hang: I can move with mouse, but clicking is not doing anything, keyboard is not working, I can only do CTR+ALT+F2 to switch to console.
Looks that it happen after ALT+TAB or CTRL+ALT+{arroy up/down}
Sometime it tooks few seconds and system is working again, but sometimes I need to restart gdm.
I did check log find this strange messages:
1)
firefox.desktop[6582]: Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_i965.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
2)
gdm-Xorg-:0[6062]: The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
gdm-Xorg-:0[6062]: > Warning: Compat map for group 2 redefined
gdm-Xorg-:0[6062]: > Using new definition
gdm-Xorg-:0[6062]: > Warning: Compat map for group 3 redefined
gdm-Xorg-:0[6062]: > Using new definition
gdm-Xorg-:0[6062]: > Warning: Compat map for group 4 redefined
gdm-Xorg-:0[6062]: > Using new definition

anything else looks okay
thank you for any help / idea / solution ...

seems graphic card related.
so, what's your graphic card/chip and driver/module?
also posting /var/log/Xorg.0.log might help, but please use code tags!

you have the exact same problem on both your pc and your laptop?
then it can't be graphic card related, obviously.
maybe something in the way you installed gnome?
when the hang occurs, change to another tty using ctrl+alt+f(1-8), log in, type "top" and try to see if something is eating your resources.

First, make sure your system is up to date. You are running an old xorg-server there. I assume you haven't updated in a while?

1) yes, problem is same. in case of hang, I am trying to find out if there is a process eating resources, using htop, but not finding anything strange.
what you mean sound card? or way of install gnome? I did indtall arch on PC maybe 2 - 3 years ago, and on Laptop in november last year.
2) old xorg-server ???
I am running pacman -Syu almost every day. So I think that my system is up to date.
pacman -Qs xorg-server
local/xorg-server 1.15.1-1 (xorg)
Xorg X server
local/xorg-server-common 1.15.1-1
Xorg server common files
local/xorg-server-utils 7.6-3
Transition package depending on xorg server utilities
do I updating my system wrong? or is there another way?
Offline
i have the same xorg version.
system up-to date. using lts kernel.
please show us how the problem is the same on both machines.

it is bit strange problem, usually it happen when switching application with ALT+TAB or changing desktop with CTRL+ALT+arrowUp/Down
looks that system is still working (mouse cursor is moving when moving mouse but click are not response, with keyboard I can only switch to console CTRL+ALT+F2, graphics is hang) sometimes after while system is back again.
this situation are mostly happen on PC ...
I need some help with finding what is a propblem.
I guess I need to swithc more logs ...

i made a mistake in post #4 - of course it should say "graphic card" - corrected now.
i think you should make up your mind wether the problem occurs on both machines or not.
if not, concentrate on 1 machine only.
random hangs of the gui are often graphic card/driver module related, and the firefox error also seemed somewhat graphic related (video driver), but since your problem has nothing to do with firefox, it doesn't really help. or has it?
if the problem really occurs on both machines, then it can't be graphic card related.
in any case, there's still some logs you haven't provided yet, and you have to get a grip on what causes the freezes or in which circumstances they occur.

i just found this:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions … 175505062/
probably unrelated, but couldn't help noticing it's the same error message.

Well, the XOrg log you posted says
X.Org X Server 1.15.0
Release Date: 2013-12-27
But unless I'm mistaken, the latest should say:
X.Org X Server 1.15.1
Release Date: 2014-04-13
That's what lead to my statement. Is it possible you are reading an old log and not seeing the actual latest log that possibly has an error?

aha, I did checking old xorg log files. new way to check xorg logs is : journalctl -e /usr/bin/Xorg
so this is from last boot, and I am not sure if there was a hang.

Hello,
althought I use Fedora with Gnome 3.12 I suffer from very similar symptoms.
I can move the mouse cursor around and activities button/the left-upper edge of the gnome shell displays those ripples when I move the cursor over. But I am not able to open the overview, or click the activities button, the user menu also shows no reaction. ALt+F2 or windows keysdoes do not raise any reaction from the system. The window, which was active before the incident reacts on mouse and keyboard.
I realized this happens when I use my wireless Logitech Mouse adn Keyboard AND let them manage by the solaar utility. My logfile is also full of :
bumbrlicek gdm-Xorg-:0[915]: > Using new definition
bumbrlicek gdm-Xorg-:0[915]: > Warning: Compat map for group 4 redefined

Hello jancici,
do you use aby Logitech wireless devices ? I am in contact with someone with exact same issues and he also uses the Logitech Mx Revolution wireless mouse. Once he switched to an old USB mouse those issues disappeared completly.

your x log:
"evdev: Logitech USB Optical Mouse: Found 12 mouse buttons"
what kind of mouse are you using?

I think it is GENERAL problem with KEYBOARD.
DESKTOP: I am using logitech USB cable keyboard and logitech USB cable mouse.
LAPTOP: I am using logitech wireless keyboard and logitech USB cable mouse.
hang happen just few minutes ago, again error from xkbcomp. and I am working on LAPTOP without external keyboard, typing on laptop keyboard and using A4Tech cable mouse.

troubleshooting whilst jumping from one computer to another will get us nowhere, unless you are very, very clear about what output you're posting and always post everything from both computers.
actually you should do that, but do it for yourself. compare the log files and find what is the common error or warning.
it is tedious, oh so tedious work but it does not require a degree in computer science.
