Installing drivers for Intel i915

I have a Intel Corporation 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family Graphics Controller and now I would like to install the drivers from
http://dri.freedesktop.org/snapshots/

The display is allready working just fine, but I want to be able to play some games plus use some of the openGL screensavers, therefor I need the drivers.

I used hwd to configure X during install.

Im running xorg. Can I use the drivers from above location with xorg or are they only for xfree86?

Do I need to do anything else than running the installscript that comes with the drivers? Meaning: Will I have to reconfigure X?

Sincerely, Jorgen

Re: Installing drivers for Intel i915

There's an entire section in the wiki dedicated to using the i915 chipset.  I just went through a lot to get it working.. for me the solution involved using xorg 7 (from testing) and changing the driver line in xorg.conf from vesa to i810.  I didn't have to download those intel drivers at all.  Typically those are only needed if you want dual monitors or something.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

It involved xorg 7, and what more? Did you do a clean install, or just an upgrade?

How do I add testing to my pacman.d?

Sincerely, Jørgen

Re: Installing drivers for Intel i915

Just edit your rc.conf and uncomment testing, be sure to install

xf86-input-keyboard
xf86-input-mouse
xf86-video-i810

and change all fonts path to

/usr/share/fonts/

Re: Installing drivers for Intel i915

This is the post I used to upgrade to xorg7.  Please also be sure to read _Gandalf_'s post above b/c there is a specific i810 driver you will need that Judd does not explicitly mention.

It worked really well for me (as most things Arch do!)

Re: Installing drivers for Intel i915

Thanks for your help with this. I will try to do a upgrade,

Just wondering: If I do a clean install with xorg7, can I still use hwd to configure X?
And: Do I need to do the mentioned in case it's a clean install?

Sincerely, Jørgen

Re: Installing drivers for Intel i915

No hwd will not be used to configure X, you can use the same xorg.conf but be sure to change the font path, it if fails to startx the look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log you may find some missing Modules that you need to disable in xorg.conf, but most likely just changing font path and Installing All needed Drivers will be enough, check all drivers list here

Personaly i do pacman -Syu replace xorg with xorg-server then install the below packages

xorg-fonts-100dpi
xorg-fonts-75dpi
xorg-fonts-alias
xorg-fonts-encodings
xorg-fonts-misc
xf86-input-keyboard
xf86-input-mouse
xf86-video-i810
xterm

of course i do skip any already installed one...
