[Awesome WM] Horrible performance with Compton?

since an nvidia update a few months ago Compton has kinda gone to shit. everything is laggy and buggy. this is the line I have in .xinitrc

compton --backend glx --vsync opengl-swc --xrender-sync --xrender-sync-fence &

what the problem is?!?!?

oh sorry, also, I don't have any vsync issues that is all fine... it's just repaint issues

Try changing the backend from glx to something else.

What is your video chip set? 
compton --vsync drm works swimmingly on my Intel video system

it fixed some previous repaint issues and screen errors that were occurring. but it seems to be very unstable now :\

right now I have just

compton --vsync opengl &

and it seems to be a little bit better...

I see, at first i thought it sounded like simething that would take a lot of power. haven't tried it yet myself.
