SLEEP hook explanation

Hi,
I have problems with lvm on boot, just today it failed 2x and it seem it was due to filesystem check on other (non-lvm) filesystems.
I would try to add SLEEP hook into mkinitcpio.conf, and I just wander what is the proper way to set two variables: sleeptime and sleepdevice and what exactly sleepdevice does.
But I failed to found any guide about this hook and I dont want to edit the script (/usr/lib/initcpio/hooks/sleep) itself, there is perhaps right way how to set the variables

EDIT: I want to set sleep time for like 2 seconds, default (5 seconds) seems quite a lot to me
