[solved] fan control (on Dell T7610)

How can I control the fan speed of a Dell T7610?

The archlinux wiki on fan control gives some hints but I do not manage to monitor the fan, let alone adjust it. Right now -under some serious workload, 2x12 cores, all in use- my workstation is close to a meltdown with sustained temperatures of 70-80C.

Any clues?

Re: [solved] fan control (on Dell T7610)

Exactly as said, I don't manage to monitor nor control the fan speed. The wiki page has a step by step guideline, but the lm_sensor does not find the fans. (And the chipset, intel C600 is not listed in /etc/sensors3.conf).

It seems however that this is a BIOS related problem. The "auto" setting does not increase the fan speed until the cores reach 80C. (Setting it to "medium" does a good job but comes at the cost of +30dB)

Update:

While on many internet fora this problem was described as a BIOs problem, it can be solved on linux.

# modprobe i8k
# sensors-detect
# sensors -s
# pwmconfig
# systemctl start fancontrol

The off-the-shelf result is still a bit shaky. At some point (60C) the fans start at full speed, when the temperature drops below 60C, the fan speed returns to the low baseline speed. Not sure how to set it gradually.
