xhci_hcd trouble.

The problem usually happens when i use a particular ext4 formated drive.

And usb mounting stops working. A reboot fixes this.

The drive doesn't always give me trouble. Some times it acts like above others it works as it is supposed to.

HW problem or something SW related?

Probably software related. There have been a lot of issues with this kernel driver. maybe try reloading the module when this happens with:

sudo modprobe -r xhci_hcd
sudo modprobe xhci_hcd

if nothing else it may save you a reboot... sorry I cant help more

The thing is that it does it only with that particular ext4 drive. My other drive that uses ntfs (with fuse) works fine.

Is your other drive also usb 3.0? my guess is that it doesnt have anything to do with the filesystem but the kernel support for your particular hardware.
If you are on a desktop, also try plugging the drive directly into your motherboard and not into the front. It could be a power issue, and from what I understand the front ports do not give as much power.

The ext4 drive is USB 2 the ntfs one (mentioning filesystems just to tell them apart) is USB 3.

At one point I was having issues when I used a usb2 device into a usb3 hub then would have issues with all other usb3 devices either reverting to usb2 speeds or even erroring out when it came to file copies.

No issues when only usb3 device on hub.

I believe it was an actual issue with a flaky hub that the drivers did not play nice with.

I was able to fix the issue with a change in bios. If I remember correctly it was a setting XHCI/EHCI handoff ??

When the setting was changed the problem went away. X

Ultimately I got a new usb hub and have had no issues since.

You could be experiencing something similar with usb2/usb3 conflicts.
