So I have a laptop, ASUS R500VM.
according to lspci,
my soundcard is: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04)
according to alsamixer, I have Intel PantherPoint HDMI chip.
The problem I'm having is:
speaker-test works with internal laptop speakers.
When I plug in the headphones, the 3.5mm plug, the internal speakers stop, but the headphones are still quiet.
The headphones work on Windows, so it is not a malfunction of the headphones.
If you need any more information to solve this problem, feel free to ask.
Thanks! I live in a dorm so headphones are really useful...
Also, the headphones have worked before. I recently installed lm_sensors and laptop-mode-tools and hdparm and xfce4-sensors-plugin and cpupower. I have uninstalled all of them. Before I installed them, the headphones worked on Linux.

Have you pulled up a mixer and ensured that the headphone volume is up and they are not muted?

I have the same issue. My laptop:
Asus k56c
lspci | grep -i aud
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04)
The only warkaround which I've found is restart laptop several times. I can't undestand what happens.....
