Did you set any of the options for the i915 module?

It helps in the power saving, but some might cause instabilities. I have
options i915 i915_enable_rc6=7 i915_enable_fbc=1 lvds_downclock=1
options i915 powersave=1 modeset=1 semaphores=1
options i915 fastboot=1
Some of these options are on by default or have no effect, but this config file was inherited from my previous computer. I have no instability issues as far as I can tell (unless I'm using flash....).
Is there a pattern of what causes your system to crash? You can also try enabling sshd and seeing if only the graphics hung on your computer by accessing it through another computer with ssh.

No pattern. Sometimes it happens twice in a row.
Thanks, I added those options - maybe it will increase stability.

I also did notice those freezes. Not sure why this is happening. I am using Gnome and set those "tearfree" options mentioned on the wiki (/etc/enviroment). I also am using the noop-elevator and for my webbrowsers i have the psd-daemon running. For now those freezes only appear when opening certain websites, but it is not flash-related (it happens even when using firefox without the flashplugin or when using google-chrome with pepperflash).@gothmog123 do you have a similar setup?
PS: I removed the tearfree-options and it seems to solve the problem. (at least i couldn't reproduce the freezes for some time)

It seems to be a Intel-DRM problem. This patch link seems to address it (for linux 3.15).
In these cases, I can usually still login to the computer through ssh, so I believe it's "just" a GPU hang. I think this is even worse because the GPU memory is shared with the CPU, so this wrapping MIGHT be causing memory corruption. Who knows...
Let's keep our fingers crossed (;

It might be just my imagination but I tried something drastic and it hasn't happened since then. Switched systemd temporarily with openrc. Is this fathomable for anyone? Wild guess but this might be related to how systemd handles crashing or misbehaving processes? Seems like my mpd crashes sometimes. Then it's not chromebook related...

Anyone made progress on the 64-bit installation problem?
I've also filed a bug report: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/40637?project=6

Just wanted to write a quick note thanking everyone who solved the problems with this machine. I installed the kernel and that works great. Suspend is working, the touchpad is pretty decent, battery life is excellent. Still having a couple of config issues, but those are general arch things and to be expected (Jack/SSD optimization).
For anyone who's curious, if you want a stripped down arch (i3, no desktop) this thing flies.I recommend it.

Hi guys!
I'm about to buy C720 (or HP 14, haven't made my mind yet) and I have a few questions for you since I couldn't find any decent reviews.
How is the overall build quality? Does it feel like it's going to fall apart when opening lid (like some other low-end Acer laptops)?
Does plastic feel particularly cheap and how does it cope with fingerprints? Are viewing angles as bad as most reviews say they are
(usage in bed is my biggest concern) and does viewing multiple tiled windows at the same time on such a small diagonal actually
make any sense? Have you ever run into out-of-memory scenario? I'm not going to use it as my main machine, but being able to open 40+
Firefox tabs while listening to music (often in flash) and having LibreOffice or Gimp running is a must for me. It's been a while since I had less than
8 GB of ram so I have no idea what to expect.
Thanks in advance!

The build is good, I'd say. The plastic is pretty light, but feels sturdy enough. The hinge is good, if that's your main concern. The keyboard and touchpad have a matte finish, which does prevent fingerprints from showing, but I assume the finish will start to become more glossy overtime.
Viewing angles are not great, but I don't think should be a problem unless you plan to watch a movie with more than 3 or 4 people. The resolution is 1368x768, it's pretty reasonable. People are now bananas about 4K and what not, but forget that until somewhat recently, 1024x768 was still the standard. I don't stack too many windows, but it is enough for internet browsing and light gaming.
About memory, yes, I have been in OOM situations. I have experimented with just letting the OOM killer do its thing, use zram and physical swap. I don't usually open more than 10 tabs, so I can't say. Firefox usually sits around 25 to 30% memory in those cases, YMMV. If you find a reasonably priced 4GB RAM mode, I'd suggest you get that one.

Thanks! I guess I'll try to find 4GB version, but I'll probably go for HP since refurbished 4GB version is much cheaper ($238 at Wallmart).

By using the wiki I now have an Acer c720 running Arch Linux.
I want to give this computer away with Chrome OS on it. My problem is that I set the gbb flags to boot into Arch automaticaly I now I cant restore Chrome. How do set the GBB flags back to default?
Offline
First of all you have to get the chromeos recovery iso on your USB drive. This is possible from your arch installation. (https://dl.google.com/dl/edgedl/chromeo … ecovery.sh)
With your chromebook powered off, you have to press esc+forward(arrow on the top, usually f2)+power-button. Then insert your USB and chromeos will be installed. After that, you have to remove the USB drive and your chromebook will reboot. Press ctrl+d at the bootscreen and chromeos will start up.
In order to reverse the gbb flags so that chromeos will boot automatically, "sudo set_gbb_flags.sh 0x0" within your chromeos session should do the trick, but I am not 100% sure about that. Maybe someone more experienced can confirm this?
PS: for the last step, don't forget the write protection screw, if you placed it back before. The screw has to be removed in order to set the gbb flags!

Any way to get the touchpad script working with kernel 3.15? The patching part fails.

I'm having a similar issue except with the 3.14.6 kernel, tried the aur build too.

I'm testing 3.15 and the freeze happens with it too, I thought it was going to be patched for 3.15:(

Hello
Has anybody noticed that without Gnome or KDE (in AwesomeWM and Openbox etc) that the battery life is significatly less?
It seems that for some reason, when Gnome or KDE isn't running, the fan on the C720 constantly spins at it's highest speed, whereas if you're in Gnome or KDE, the fan is managed corretly. I've tried doing a sensors-detect, but no information on the fan speed is displayed.
If anybody has any information on this issue, please help; even if it's just the chipset that I should be looking into. By changing to a less CPU intensive GUI, I've pretty much halved my battery life.
Thanks

Are you using any power management tool? (laptop-mode-tools, tlp, etc?) If so, check with powertop to see if the settings are being correctly handled.
I know GNOME handles some of the power settings, so this might be the reason. But you should be using tlp (or something similar) regardless

Will you let us know if the kernel patch at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=79813 fixes it?

The backlight works again with that patch.

I've edited the patches a bit to apply cleanly to 3.15.
Here's a PKGBUILD, which also includes the backlight fix:
https://aur.archlinux.org/pkgbase/linux-c720/
Please test and let me know how it works for you.

I'm getting failure to initialize for ipv6 with this, sorry.
BTW I'm trying to fix 'the freeze' and it seems I'm getting less of it by getting rid of the wifi/bluetooth 'balancing' kernel options from the wiki.
