[SOLVED] can't play flash in firefox using pulseaudio

When trying to play any flash-based video in firefox, the video starts to play, lowers resolution, tries again, until it eventually gives up and keeps showing the loading icon. I'm not sure what I've changed in the last few days, but I think the issue is present ever since I've installed pulseaudio on my system.

I don't really know what to do. At all.

fuser -v /dev/snd/*

/dev/snd/controlC0:  F.... pulseaudio
/dev/snd/controlC1:  F.... pulseaudio
/dev/snd/pcmC0D7p:   F...m pulseaudio
/dev/snd/pcmC1D0c:   F...m pulseaudio
/dev/snd/pcmC1D0p:   F...m pulseaudio

Re: [SOLVED] can't play flash in firefox using pulseaudio

flash player uses alsa, so alsa output needs to be routed to pulseaudio via asound configuration.
althought if you have pulseaudio-alsa installed you should already have the following /etc/asound.conf

# Use PulseAudio by default
pcm.!default {
  type pulse
  fallback "sysdefault"
  hint {
    show on
    description "Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)"
  }
}

ctl.!default {
  type pulse
  fallback "sysdefault"
}

Re: [SOLVED] can't play flash in firefox using pulseaudio

Alternatively there is libflashsupport-{pulse,jack,oss}.

Re: [SOLVED] can't play flash in firefox using pulseaudio

Thanks for your replies. I have an asoundrc in my home directory that looks exactly like that but with card 1 added (to disselect hdmi). Do I have to use libflashsupport?

Re: [SOLVED] can't play flash in firefox using pulseaudio

No, it should not be necessary, I assume however using libflashsupport-pulse will give you more control over flash content. Show your ~/.asoundrc. This might be related to the browser or the flash plugin itself. What was updated recently?

Re: [SOLVED] can't play flash in firefox using pulseaudio

Are you sure you still have pulse as a default device in your .asoundrc? The 'default' device in aplay -L output should look like this if you've copied the above asound.conf exactly:

# aplay -L
...
default
    Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)
...

Re: [SOLVED] can't play flash in firefox using pulseaudio

/etc/asound.conf

# Use PulseAudio by default
pcm.!default {
  type pulse
  fallback "sysdefault"
  hint {
    show on
    description "Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)"
  }
}

ctl.!default {
  type pulse
  fallback "sysdefault"
}

~/.asoundrc

# Use PulseAudio by default
pcm.!default {
  type pulse
  card 1
  fallback "sysdefault"
  hint {
    show on
    description "Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)"
  }
}

ctl.!default {
  type pulse
  card 1
  fallback "sysdefault"
}

aplay -L

...
default
    Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)
...

versions:
firefox 29.0.1-2
flashplugin 11.2.202.359-1
pulseaudio 5.0-1
linux 3.14.6-1

I don't know which update broke flash exactly. I've installing a couple of updates along with pulseaudio, without using flash at the time.

Re: [SOLVED] can't play flash in firefox using pulseaudio

Ooo made a point, now ''aplay -L'' differs from that one 2 hours ago. You have to restart audio applications (shown by fuser) to use new alsa configuration.

Re: [SOLVED] can't play flash in firefox using pulseaudio

I'm sorry but the difference is only due to the different description string. Other than that, ~/.asoundrc hasn't changed.

Anyway, I restarted firefox and now the flash plugin sometimes crashes right away smile

If only hint differed, I agree. What does firefox output when run in terminal?

I don't know why I didn't even think about that big_smile Well here's the output:

Re: [SOLVED] can't play flash in firefox using pulseaudio

So what do you have in adobe configuration?

cat /etc/adobe/mms.cfg

If it is enabled try disabling it, for that only flash restart is required (reloading a page).

Also I wanted to ask and apparently type pulse does not accept "card" key, so it is unnecessary there in ~/.asoundrc.

I would search for full paths with pkgfile. If you have something similar on your system, symlink it manually, or better yet repackage it, so that you do not forget about it.

Re: [SOLVED] can't play flash in firefox using pulseaudio

well, awesome, seems to work smile

"EnableLinuxHWVideoDecode=1" in mms.cfg AND "card 1" in ~/.asoundrc => flash often crashes, otherwise described behavior
"EnableLinuxHWVideoDecode=0" in mms.cfg AND "card 1" in ~/.asoundrc => flash does not crash but does not load either, no sound
"EnableLinuxHWVideoDecode=0" in mms.cfg AND NO "card 1" in ~/.asoundrc => flash works!
"EnableLinuxHWVideoDecode=1" in mms.cfg AND NO "card 1" in ~/.asoundrc => flash works! but crashes every 10th time %)

I don't really know why this would happen - I mean, an unknown directive should be ignored rather than lead to a crash - but hey, it works now smile Thank you both, emeres and ooo, for your help!
