What's the latest on getting frequently used apps to launch faster? Does pre-binding work? It seems to be taking quite a while for me to get soffice to launch even with the graphics caching tricks seen elsewhere. Same with Firefox and Thunderbird.. kind of slow even compared to other distros.
Any recommended tweaks out there?

Prelink can help: AUR
Not by any noticable amount. And you have to run it again every time your libraries are updated. And it doesn't seem to like QT applications. And it is, in general, a worthless pain in the neck. I wouldn't even bother trying it.

I have 1GB of ram. Second launches are ok (except Firefox which is dog slow). I'm hoping to speed first launch since hibernate isn't working well for me.

If you're not using (arch)CK yet, maybe it's worth giving staircase scheduler a try ;-)
