Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

It's not fixed - same immediate crash, when pressing an arrow key in mpv, to show the progressbar. Here's the patch I just created & tried, applied to bohoomil's freetype.

Probably not useful, but this is what gdb shows:

(gdb) bt
#0  0xf5cd26e8 in __memcpy_ssse3 () from /lib/libc.so.6
#1  0x094a51d8 in ?? ()
Backtrace stopped: previous frame inner to this frame (corrupt stack?)

What are the steps to produce useful output? What is M_PI set to, for him?

I don't think he sets M_PI manually, I think that's declared automatically in the OSX stdlib (which he uses).

<rcombs> doesn't really help to not compile with debug headers
<Zehkul> I don’t crash with infinality, I just get this http://i.imgur.com/B0Xdh7H.jpg
<aphirst> Zehkul, yeah I was getting that when i tried (well, when bohoomil added rcombs' patches to infinality the first time, the other day)
<aphirst> I myself didn't get a crash
<aphirst> only brebs in the forum got a crash
<rcombs> Zehkul: does it work normally on the regular freetype-fpu?
<Zehkul> rcombs, yeah it does
<rcombs> OK, I'm going to declare all bugs not-my-fault until proven otherwise

In short, at this point it seems as if it interferes somehow with something set in infinality. Which makes absolutely no sense to me as the files involving the trigonometric functions don't seem to be touched at all as part of the infinality patches. Not as far as I could tell, anyway.

@bohoomil, are you able to confirm this?

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

/etc/fonts/conf.d/45-source-sans-pro.conf  -> ../conf.avail/45-source-sans-pro.conf

but

/etc/fonts/conf.d/../conf.avail/45-source-code-pro.conf
/etc/fonts/conf.d/../conf.avail/45-source-serif-pro.conf

I find a bug/broken-symlink

Well, I suppose that this is somekind of signature, no?

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

@aphirst I have not experienced any crashes, but subs rendering is still broken.

@Jristz Thanks a lot -- fixed.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

I think this image explains my issue better than me trying to describe it. Basically, on several websites digits look a bit clowny. This happens in both Chromium and Firefox (both browsers use "Sans" as the default font), I'm using the combi preset and haven't changed anything else. I have installed ttf-ms-win8, don't know if this is noteworthy though.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

@Weegee Sans is only an alias: please, check the output of `fc-match` to find out which font you are actually using. I believe it can be TeX Gyre Heros or some Helvetica derivative (this is a well known issue with TeX Gyre Heros). I think you should also check if you have instructed fontconfig-iu to use MS fonts: run `fc-presets check` and if the output does not read [ ms ], set the correct preset accordingly.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

@bohoomil I know about the alias, I use it everywhere to create a uniform look for all applications smile

fc-match Sans output:

NotoSans-Regular.ttf: "Noto Sans" "Regular"

fc-presets check output:

5 symlinks found.
The active preset seems to be [ combi ].
Checking symlinks now...

30-metric-aliases-combi.conf is OK
37-repl-global-combi.conf is OK
60-latin-combi.conf is OK
65-non-latin-combi.conf is OK
66-aliases-wine-combi.conf is OK

Also, just for good measure, the output of fc-match -a

You've mentioned TeX Gyre Heros earlier and it seems like it replaces some fonts from the ttf-ms-win8 package? Is it even possible to use the fonts from the Windows 8 font compilation packages if I'm not using the ms preset?

Thank you so much for your work by the way, I'm a rather finicky person when it comes to details like font rendering and your packages and settings really make everything look so smooth compared to ... other operating systems wink

EDIT: I've removed lots of unneeded but still installed fonts packages (the one which included the TeX Gyre fonts among others), and now everything looks smooth again! I've still got one more question: Is there a chance for the Roboto fonts to be added to the fonts bundle repository?

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

@Weegee The question is: Did you configure the 'combi' preset at all? smile 'combi' is not supposed to be used "as is": this is actually only a set of templates you will need if you are going to create your custom font collection. (Currently, [ combi ] is a combination---sic!---of free fonts for Latin-based languages and MS fonts for most non-Latin scripts; it can be used as an example for individual tweaking.)

If you are going to use MS fonts as your default set (for your sans, serif, mono, Georgia, Carlito -- you name it), which seems to be what you really want, then you should set [ ms ] as your preset. You can further customize it if necessary with `37-repl-custom.conf` or on a per-user basis via $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/fontconfig (there are even a few presets available in the package to make life easier). I suppose you will not even need to customize anything: setting [ ms ] with fc-presets will do the job.

All those tricks will be clarified in the documentation.

(…I appreciate your "review" -- thanks a lot. wink )

Oh, I think I misunderstood what it actually is for then.

I don't want to use the MS fonts as my default fonts though, I've installed them just to be able to actually use them when I want to (i. e. if I select Arial in GIMP then it actually uses Arial and not a free font replacement). I love the free fonts and I thought I had to use the combi preset in order to be able to use the MS fonts as well ... which doesn't seem to be the case I guess?

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

Once again then.

If you want to replace MS fonts with free alternatives, you need to install the free collection and enable the [ free ] preset.

if I select Arial in GIMP then it actually uses Arial and not a free font replacement

This means that you really want to use MS fonts as a base collection. The [ free ] preset will swap Arial for Liberation Sans, Helvetica for TeX Gyre Heros, etc; [ ms ] will not replace anything.

Setting the [ ms ] preset does not mean you will not be able to use free fonts. You can install and use any number of fonts you like: free and proprietary, cheap and expensive, ugly and nice, they will not collide. Setting the preset merely defines the function of certain fonts in the system: it is simply a declaration of a few environmental variables and "generic behaviours", so to speak. Sounds clear enough? wink

(I will push Roboto to the repository one of these days.)

So if you want generally free fonts, but keep microsoft font names unchanged if they are specifically requested, then you'll have to set it up manually with the ms preset as base? e.g.

default -> NotoSans
serif -> Heuristica
sans-serif -> NotoSans
monospace -> Liberation mono
Times -> Liberation Serif
Helvetica -> Liberation Sans
Courier -> Courier Prime
----
Arial -> Arial
Times New Roman -> Times New Roman
Georgia -> Georgia
Verdana -> Verdana
Courier New -> Courier New

Exactly: save  /etc/fonts/conf.avail.infinality/ms as /etc/fonts/conf.avail.infinality/combi (do not forget to rename individual files, too!), modify the files accordingly (i.e. set default aliases in 60-latin-combi.conf, global replacements in 37-repl-global-combi.conf, etc.), finally activate [ combi ] with fc-presets.

Woops - I had assumed that installed fonts requested by name would be used, regardless of which preset was in operation.
Looks like I've got some config files to edit later sad.

Ah, I see. I've copied everything from the free preset over to the combi directory, renamed it, then replaced the 37-repl-global-combi.conf with the one from the ms preset. I should've figured this out while I read the actual config files, but for some reason I didn't tongue

Thanks for your support!

This is actually my fault: had the documentation been updated by the time fc-presets were released, no one would need to decipher config files and play guessing games. Now that the project has matured and is mostly error-free, the repositories are working smoothly and plenty of little tasks has been completed in the mean time, this is going to change soon. Without a proper introduction, however, I do not expect anyone to know from the start how to deal with the stuff inside `/etc/fonts`.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

@bohoomil

A specific font type in Spotify is not properly rendered.

Screenshot

Is it possible to improve it?

As in the past, I use the free preset with default settings.

Let me know if I can provide you more information!

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

@orschiro
I had similar issue with certain font that was resolved by setting

export INFINALITY_FT_USE_VARIOUS_TWEAKS="false"

in /etc/profile.d/infinality-settings.sh

not sure if it helps in your case but something to try.
I'm not really sure how INFINALITY_FT_USE_VARIOUS_TWEAKS effects font rendering but I didn't notice any issues after disabling it

No. This can be worked around by setting 'Xft.rgba: none'. Try writing a simple wrapper for Spotify that would temporarily change this value (e.g. `echo "Xft.rgba: none" | xrdb -merge`)and re-set it to the default one when Spotify quits (`echo "Xft.rgba: rgb" | xrdb -merge`).

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

Thanks guys!

I now use the following function alias that seems to work around the issue.

spotify-infinality-fix() {
    echo "Xft.rgba: none" | xrdb -merge
    spotify
    echo "Xft.rgba: rgb" | xrdb -merge
}

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

I've just done a fresh arch install and loaded infinality on. Most things look excellent, however there are a few areas that I've noticed so far that look a little odd. Firstly and most importantly the Japanese bitmap font in urxvt looks pretty terrible. It's blurred and out of focus.

Japanese Bitmap Font

It also seems like sometimes small-ish text in Firefox doesn't render very well. To me it looks like it's sort of blurry, or bleeding out a bit.

http://a.pomf.se/nobbaj.png

I also notice a similar thing happening with Japanese language fonts that are 'thin' for lack of a better word.

Wanikani unlocks

I'm using the free preset with the default settings. I did install the ttf-ms-win8 fonts from the AUR and try out the MS preset but I decided I liked free better. I've just left the windows fonts installed though, as well as having ibfonts bundles installed. I'm assuming it's ok to do that? Or should I have only one or the other installed. Here's the relevant bit from my ~/.Xresources;

URxvt.font: xft:lemon:pixelsize=10, \
	[codeset=JISX0208]xft:GohuFont:pixelsize=11
URxvt.boldFont: xft:lemon:pixelsize=10, \
	[codeset=JISX0208]xft:GohuFont:pixelsize=11

Xft.antialias:	1
Xft.autohint:	0
Xft.dpi:	96
Xft.hinting:	1
Xft.hintstyle:	hintfull
Xft.lcdfilter:	lcddefault
Xft.rgba:	rgb

I'm not quite sure if urxvt is even using GohuFont for japanese however. Any help you could give would be appreciated. If it weren't for these few things everything would be perfect! 90% of things look absolutely amazing as it is.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

After adding a couple of fonts (ttf-freefont, ttf-arphic-uming and ttf-baekmuk recommended in the wiki) my fonts in some places look really weird. I tried removing them but it didn't change back. It looks like the default font is bold now.

Try rebuilding your font cache and see if it helps.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

@quiv Are you sure that GohuFont supports Japanese language script? It does have a pretty extensive repertoire of glyphs for Latin languages (not for all sizes, though), but limited for non-Latin scripts (Greek, Cyrillic and Hebrew). Hence fontconfig picks an outline font to display missing glyphs as none of the fonts you are using have them. If you insist on using bitmap fonts in your terminal emulator, choose those which seamlessly display languages you need (Fixed does it for instance).

On the other hand, the two screenshots look fine to me (here is one of the sites in Firefox for comparison -- shot). I am sorry if there is something truly disturbing in them: I just cannot see it…

@zeroone FreeFont is the family I would never recommend. If you want to have a proper support for multilingual content, install `ibfonts-meta-extended` package from `infinality-bundle-fonts` repository. The three packages you mention can be safely removed.

@cpoon The screenshot looks OK to me: the question is whether it does to you? wink

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

Thanks, I tried doing that but there was no change.

Turning on hinting seems to have improved how it looks, but also made it more clear that its a different font. Here's another screen for comparison, new font on the left and old font to the right:
