I've been at this all day. I can't get my microphone input (front jack) to work. I've got alsa+pulseaudio setup. Checked alsamixer, it's not muted (impossible to mute.). It also shows CAPTURE. Volume is all the way up, as well as on Master. Also Master isn't muted.
I have noticed in pavucontrol that the meter jumps when I insert/remove my input.
Some hopefully useful outputs:

Can you capture anything using arecord with pulseaudio killed? If not check mappings of the sound card using hdajackretask from alsa-tools package. Play around with format parameters if the default ones do not work. Instead of describing the mixer post the output of amixer.

I tried removing Pulseaudio. (Really needed it but just to see if things worked.)

Tried VLC. Can pick up the internal mic, but when I plug something in I get nothing. I'm beginning to think the jack is dead. Also, I have a usb headset plugged in, hence the extra output/input.

Removing pulseaudio is not necessary, just kill it. In worst case scenario remove pulseaudio-alsa package.
