Cups filter mystery

This is the second computer where I have had the same problem and solution. I wonder if anyone can explain what's going on and how to get this working as intended?

Both are 64 bit Dell laptops.

The printer is a Konica Minolta 2530dl (colour laser), connected via ethernet. The manufacturers supplied driver gives better results than the foomatic one, so I'm using it. On both systems I initially built the driver from KM's supplied source, appeared to work, but it would bomb out with a "filter failed" error. The error log would say something about "no profiles in PPD".

So on both systems I unpacked the supplied RPM, copied out the filter in place of the one I had built, restarted cups. Hey presto, printer works!

So, can anyone explain why this is happening, and how I can get my compiled filter to work?

Thanks in advance!
