[RESOLVED] Blank screen after kernel upgrade

Hi all,

I have arch on a dell inspiron 1525. Two days ago the laptop was working perfectly fine, and I did the following:

1. I installed pipelight as it is presented here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pipelight
2. I installed xcalib and as per https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/backlight#xcalib I did the following to reduce backlight:

xcalib -co 40 -a

3. I did

sudo pacman -Syu; systemctl poweroff

and went to bed.

Today I turned on my laptop. Now, before X starts, the screen shows a few vertical stripes, each made of lots of thin horizontal lines,
and then it goes blank forever. I had an old hard disk lying around with another arch installation, I put it in, and the laptop works fine
(that's where I'm writing from), so it is not a hardware issue for sure.

Any ideas what I should do now? Can it be that something went wrong when I updated pacman and it was shutoff? Or is it xcalib that
did something to the monitor?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated..

Edit: See post #11 for a picture of how the monitor looks right before it goes blank
Edit 2: Edited the title, as it was shown later, it had to do with the kernel upgrading

Re: [RESOLVED] Blank screen after kernel upgrade

Did you literally run 'sudo pacman -Syu; systemctl poweroff'?
Anything interesting in the logs or in systemd's journal?

Yes.. That was my way of turning off the computer after the upgrade. Was that a bad idea?

Anything interesting in the logs or in systemd's journal?

How can I check that? All I'm getting is a blank screen.. Should I boot with a live cd
and do something?

Re: [RESOLVED] Blank screen after kernel upgrade

If you don't pay attention to -Syu then eventually you are going to have a bad time.  -Syu, dependent on package, outputs important information from time to time about the packages and also informs you if you have .pacnew files which you want to take care of before you reboot or halt.

Don't do that.  If you want to redact something, please use bbcode and strike it out, and leave a comment as to why.

Thanks

That makes sense, lesson learnt..

Any ideas now? Is there anything I could do with a live CD for instance?

Re: [RESOLVED] Blank screen after kernel upgrade

Can you switch to another terminal with Ctl-Alt-F2?
Bot from a liveCD and check the logs.

No. The screen is off! There's no backlight or anything, it is literally switched off..

Boot from a liveCD and check the logs.

Now, the systemd journal contains a very big amount of .journal files in binary format. I am googling around but I have yet to
find a way to read the systemd journal that lies in a different folder (in my case, /media/sdb1/var/log/journal/06372a3e83a349d1a972d9418c2d7a6a/)

Do you see anything weird on the pacman.log that I can't notice? Could you tell me how I can check the journal?

UPDATE: The file Xorg.1.log seems to be a little bit more interesting. Here it is, please check the last few lines that indicate errors.
I suspect it has to do with pipelight, as this is the only thing on this computer that has anything to do with drm and it was installed just before
the problem occured.

Re: [RESOLVED] Blank screen after kernel upgrade

From man 1 journalctl

-D DIR, --directory=DIR
Takes a directory path as argument. If specified, journalctl will
operate on the specified journal directory DIR instead of the
default runtime and system journal paths.

Re: [RESOLVED] Blank screen after kernel upgrade

Thanks loqs.. There was actually an update of the situation and I didn't have to use that. While the problem is still there, when I boot the laptop with an external VGA monitor,
the laptop boots fine, and both the external monitor and the laptop screen work as expected! If I remove the VGA cable and reboot, I get the same problem!!

So now I am writing from the problematic installation by pluging in my external monitor.

Here is the output from journalctl of the problematic boot, when I didn't have the external VGA monitor attached

Runtime journal is using 8.0M (max allowed 176.5M, trying to leave 264.8M free of 1.7G available → current limit 176.5M).

Any ideas?

Edit: I also attach a photo of how the monitor looks right before it goes blank, in the case that I don't plug the external VGA monitor.

Re: [RESOLVED] Blank screen after kernel upgrade

*Bump* Any ideas please? I'm about to do a complete format that will be a huge time-waster.. If anybody
could save me from that, I'd be really grateful.

Again, the situation is that after an upgrade, my screen goes blank after showing some weird patterns
for a few seconds, as shown in the photo in post #11. The weird part is that everything (including the
laptop screen) works perfectly if I connect an external VGA monitor! You can find all the logs for pacman,
xorg, and systemd journal in posts #9 and #11. Any ideas?

Re: [RESOLVED] Blank screen after kernel upgrade

Look in "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/" and post the contents of all files in there.

It looks like your horizontal or vertical sync to the monitor are set to improper values.  Attaching an external display those values might carry over to your primary display.

Post what video driver you are using, and version.

Uninstall xcalib with "sudo pacman -Rsn xcalib" so no configuration files from that are left over.

I had already done "sudo pacman -Rs xcalib"..

On another note, I tried to add the i915 and intel_agp to the initramfs as instructed in here, but this didn't fix anything.

Re: [RESOLVED] Blank screen after kernel upgrade

I was hoping to see an X.org configuration file that defined screen modes.  Which could have been wrong.  I don't see anything like that in what you've posted.

What you've run into is a: Killer Poke but instead of damaging hardware it has corrupted your installation as you can run the other hard drive with your other Arch installation fine.

Let's try to narrow it down.  Do you use a login manager like GDM, KDM, SLiM, etc?  If so, is the display corrupted on that?  If it is it is likely a configuration file somewhere in the system besides /home/user.  If it isn't, or you automatically log in, then the offending configuration file might be inside of your user folder.  If you auto login or your display manger screen is correct then create a new user and try to start an X session with that user.

I see.. Well, at least then it didn't damage any hardware, that's good! I do not use a login manager, instead I am using the method described here here and here to log in and start X at login automatically. For the sake of troubleshooting, I have now disabled both of those, so no autologin, no automatic X, no login manager, but the problem persists.

The problem happens before the system even reaches the login screen, so it shouldn't do make a difference if you're a different user, but just to be sure I added a new user and that didn't help either.

I don't know if that helps, but one more thing that may or may not be irrelevant:
I recently bought a new SSHD. I copy/pasted every file from my old installation on a HDD drive to this SSHD, I changed the fstab, and installed grub again from an arch linux cd that I had from last November. This is the very installation that now hangs on boot. However it has been working flawessly for a couple of weeks, even after several upgrades, so I tend to think it has nothing to do with it..
EDIT: I also changed my 2X1GB ram modules to 2X2GB, and installed a new CPU, intel T8100. But again, the system has been working flawessly for a while before this upgrade, and furthermore the old HDD with the old installation still works perfectly fine.

EDIT2: Also note the following lines from the systemd journal when the VGA adapter is not connected.. There is a line about the GPU hanging. These errors do not appear when I connect the VGA cable and the system boots fine.

Re: [RESOLVED] Blank screen after kernel upgrade

Those GPU errors are pretty low-level.  You said you enabled i915 and intel_agp, did you regenerate your initramfs after?  If not, run:

sudo mkinitcpio -p linux

And if that doesn't work downgrade your kernel back to 3.14.6 which should still be in your cache unless you deleted it:

sudo pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/linux-3.14.6-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

If that doesn't work then downgrade your intel graphics driver with an older version probably in your cache as given above too.

Edit: if you're 32 bit then x86_64 will be i686, just tab complete the command to get the right package.

Thank you, sir! If you ever pass from Ottawa please drop me a line 'cause I owe you a pint!

Downgrading to 3.14.6-1-i686 was the solution (yes, the initramfs was regenerated in my previous unsuccesful try).

Now, I am wondering what's next.. It's the first time that I find myself having to keep packages from upgrading.
Could you please enlighten me on any the following?

  1. If I understand well from the wiki, I should put something like IgnorePkg   = linux in my /etc/pacman.conf, is that so?

  2. Until when should I keep the kernel from upgrading? Sounds like a messy prospect..

  3. Should I file some kind of bug report?

  4. My linux-headers are still for 3.15.1:

    jorge@flamingo:~$ sudo pacman -Si linux-headers
    [sudo] password for jorge:

Re: [RESOLVED] Blank screen after kernel upgrade

You can ignore the linux package but that is not a solution, it is a work-around.

To find the cause you need to bisect the kernels between 3.14.6 and 3.15.1, however, that is an advanced user action.  I've never done it just seen that others have done it.

A bug report should be filed, with the kernel directly (upstream) and I would hang onto your 3.14.6 kernel package to reinstall while you test to see if each new mainline kernel corrects the issue.

The headers are important for DKMS if I recall correctly, building modules.  If you don't build kernel modules then I wouldn't worry too much about them.

You're welcome for so far. smile

Ouch.. I'm not sure if I have the time to invest on learning to do that right now. Maybe I'll just wait for the new kernels to fix the issue.

I see.. I guess that's what I'm going to do. Do you think it's a good idea to try a kernel from testing?

Good.

Now, the problem is with filing a bug. I went to the bug tracker and I'm totally lost. I'm reading the posts, people are asked to bisect
the kernels, apply patches, and show debug logs.. All new to me.. Anyway, I will leave this post open and I will post updates of the
situation with the bug report.

Thanks for the help again.

Re: [RESOLVED] Blank screen after kernel upgrade

You're welcome.  smile  I couldn't bisect a kernel to save my life either.  Perhaps just keeping your working kernel package kicking around and trying new kernels as they come out would be best.

I wouldn't pull in a kernel from testing, testing is an "all or nothing" proposition - it's not meant to be cherry-picked.  And if you enable testing properly then everything is testing.

Re: [RESOLVED] Blank screen after kernel upgrade

Oh my.. I've been reading around and bisecting the kernel is totally out of my league.. I certainly don't have the time
to spend on learning this kind of thing right now, real life is way too busy for that. Furthermore, I couldn't find any
arch-specific instructions on bisecting the kernel on the wiki, which makes it even scarier (wiki made me a bit spoiled!)

And the bug tracker, I don't even know where to start. For one, under which category should I file? I assume
Drivers -> Video (DRI - Intel)? Any suggestions about how I should phrase the bug? Does it make sense to
try to file it if I am unable to proceed with the bisecting?

C'mon! Can only boot if I have an external monitor plugged in.. Thus couldn't move it away from the monitor before the workaround..
Ok, I admit, bad joke but too late to edit now. sad

Re: [RESOLVED] Blank screen after kernel upgrade

Just a heads up, it is a bug indeed; marked as [RESOLVED] while waiting for the next kernel release
