[SOLVED] gnome videos plays movies "fast-forward" without any sound

Totem was working fine a few days ago. after an update which included Linux 3.15.2 (I'm not sure if this is the culprit), totem is playing movies super fast without any audio. In addition, VLC will not output any sound through my laptop speakers if pulse audio is the selected audio device; however, HDMI works with this configuration. Perhaps Pulse Audio is to blame?

Yes, I've seen audio driver / configuration problems cause those types of errors (sorry I'm not much help otherwise). sad

Have you made a change to your audio configuration recently? Something besides a system update...

I haven't touched my audio configuration. /etc/asound.conf indicates that Pulse Audio is the default ALSA output.

I've seen this happen when the audio device selected by PulseAudio is not correct (on a Radeon HDMI system, I can trigger the fault by yanking the HDMI cable before disabling that device). If you are on Gnome, check what happens if you select different audio output devices in Settings/Audio.

Thanks. That did the trick. Both totem and vlc are fixed by selecting a different output in settings->sound and then reselecting the speakers output. VLC now works correctly if the audio device is set to 'Automatic'.
