Audacity problems with Sound I/O

When starting audacity, I get an error message telling me (in German language) "error initialising Audio I/O layer. Record / Playback impossible. Host error."

In the audacity settings, there is no device listed in the dropdown fields.

Other sound is ok (wav, CD, Line In etc.), The mixer works, too.
Soundcard is an old Soundblaster 128 PCI, a common model, I guess.
Alsa drivers are loaded, OSS not.

What is wrong with my system?

Thanks for tipps,
Dieter

Re: Audacity problems with Sound I/O

As far as I know Audacity only works with OSS. You should load the apropriate alsa-oss models to your sound card.

I tried to run Audacity under 'aoss' but it didn't work I'm afraid...

Re: Audacity problems with Sound I/O

The oss drivers are loaded now, but the audacity error messages haven't changed. Is audactiy missing a special dev/xxx?

lsmod | grep oss
snd_seq_oss            33408  0
snd_seq_midi_event      6400  1 snd_seq_oss
snd_seq                51984  4 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event
snd_pcm_oss            50848  0
snd_mixer_oss          17920  1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_seq_device          7436  3 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_rawmidi
snd_pcm                84100  4 snd_pcm_oss,snd_ens1371,snd_ac97_codec
snd                    49124  12 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_ens1371,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer

Re: Audacity problems with Sound I/O

Are you using a sound daemon like esound/jack/arts?

Re: Audacity problems with Sound I/O

Yes, as I use KDE, arts is installed, too (kdelibs depends on arts). Jack-audio-connection-kit is required by arts. Esound is not installed.

Ok, artsd is the daemon preventing audacity from correct work! After "killall artsd" audacity starts without error messages and devices are listed in the settings panel.

After some googling I found 2 possible solutions:
- Either I use self compiled audacity with alsa support, i. e. ./configure --with-portaudio=v19
- Or I must shutdown artsd before starting audacity

Thanks for your hints!

Re: Audacity problems with Sound I/O

That's two solutions, now over to the good stuff: dmix

http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=DmixPlugin

Do point 3. in the link and restart KDE. If it only works with OSS, then use ALSA OSS emulation (I think it should be loaded by default).

Re: Audacity problems with Sound I/O

I checked the forum for similar problems and found that thread:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … light=alsa
"Get rid of aRts" is the solution that is the easiest way to start audacity without problems and get back the missing sound of realplayer.

Then I set up dmix, now everything seems to be fine.
Thanks!
