There is a good deal of data present on an HDD with a corrupted to hell windows install. I do not want to attach the disk to any of my boxen incase there is malicious software present, but the data I need to retrieve is important to my family. The idea I like best for dealing with this is to boot the machine with a linux liveCD that has an ftp server script I can activate in order to be able to pull the data to another box, who's folder I have drive mapped in a windows xp machine with anti virus software installed.

What about using ssh/fish etc.? It might be easier. I think knoppix/kanotix can do that - probably most other live CDs too.

I just tried kanotix-2005-3. There is an entry in the kanotix menu to start the ssh server. It works fine - though you will need a password or public key file to access it from outside. I did 'sudo passwd' to set a root password, and then remote access was no problem.
