Poor graphics !

Hi,

My PC model is Toshiba C50-A-153 with integrated Intel graphics card. The graphics are poor especially when scrolling in firefox and the PDF readers. The problem is the same with many other distros with the stock installed Intel driver.  On my other, PC Dell optilex, there is also an integrated Intel graphics card and there is no issues.

Any idea to solve this issue ? There is others driver to install like  non-free drivers ?

Help me please. I can't enjoy my  PC with this scrolling lags.

Thx.

EDIT:

Graphics card:  00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09)
CPU  (in case) Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 1005M @ 1.90GHz

Can't find it.

Is your $PATH set correct?? Could you run `locate glxinfo` or manually search it in your /bin ?? Because it is a big problem in itself.........
Also would you mind telling your system architecture(32-bit / 64-bit)?? and is this glitchy only in scrollbars??

'glxinfo not found' means that he doesn't have mesa-demos package installed

I'm sorry I assumed the OP already had mesa-demos(since they are chipset specific I thought they would be necessarily a dependency to one of the driver package)
It did be great if the OP tells about it, to be clear enough

I'm going to take a blind stab in the dark here: /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

        Identifier "Intel Graphics"
        Driver "Intel"

Re: Poor graphics !

@ugjka : I already tried this method and the result is the same.  However thank you for sharing the link smile

@ArchKudo Only  in scollbars and particularly with Firefox and PDFs readers. System architecture is 64bits. So, the mesa-demos is installed and this is the output of the glxinfo :

Re: Poor graphics !

Can you please watch your cpu usage when you are scrolling in firefox. This could be a cpu problem. I mean celorons are pretty old imo.

Hummm there is no huge consumption when scrolling in Firefox. Maybe it's a little bit old but if all was good on W7 last year, it's should be also ok with Linux distros. As I said, on my old Optilex (2006) with Pentium D is Ok.

It's such headache because I spent many times on this issues and can't find nothing.

Re: Poor graphics !

Well, the Xorg log looks reasonable, and the glxinfo shows you have hardware acceleration working.
I am a little concerned over these lines in the log:

[ 14.776] (II) intel(0): Using Kernel Mode Setting driver: i915, version 1.6.0 20080730
[ 14.778] (WW) Falling back to old probe method for modesetting

I would not expect that.  But, please confirm that the native resolution of your display is 1366x768.

Also, what do you mean by poor graphics?  does this have to do with fonts and font rendering? or or jpegs and other pictures of poor quality?

Re: Poor graphics !

install intel-gpu-tools
then run as root intel_gpu_top
When scrolling in firefox watch 'render busy' percentage. Does it go to 100%?
Also watch 'render space'.

Also can you show us the output of (run it in root)

for i in /sys/module/i915/parameters/*; do echo $i=$(cat $i); done

Yes, the native resolution is 1366*768. By poor graphics I mean my fonts are "jerky" and  become "blurred" when scrolling. I found a temporary solution. I disabled the smooth scrolling in Firefox (Settings, Advanced, General). So scrolling is like "bloc by bloc" scrolling but the fonts are Ok now.

There are no issues with quality pictures or video sites like youtube.

The maximum value of render busy when scrolling quickly on the huge wikipedia pages is 18 and the value of render space is 19/131072.
(Firefox smooth scrolling was enabled)

Re: Poor graphics !

If your graphics get only 18% utilization, then it probably means that gpu is not the bottleneck here. Hmmm...

Re: Poor graphics !

I don't have an XFCE4 installation at hand.  Does the settings dialog thing have a fonts control?  Does it include any controls over "Hinting"?  If so, try turning it off or using a different sub-pixel orientation.

Hinting is where they try to improve the kerning of fonts by "fuzzing" the edges where the 'dots' needed to draw a font don't line up with the physical pixels on your display.  They play games with the Red Green and Blue sub-pixels to trade a little bit of color error at the edges for a little better kerning.  But, if the assumptions about the orientation of the sub-pixels are wrong, things will look hideous.

Also, are you running a compositor?  Are you inadvertently running more than one compositor?  Be aware that XFCE4 has its own compositor.  Try turning off composting.

Re: Poor graphics !

Hinting and this kind of stuff are disabled in the settings. The compositor was enabled but now is also disabled. With all of these things, the result is the same. Finally, by disabling the smooth scrolling is not really bad. I do not mind if it is not smooth and I will take a look to find if I there are some ways to disable the smooth scrolling across the whole system.

Re: Poor graphics !

If this happens with other distros, I'd say you are hitting a rare corner case. If that were the case, you should post to the Intel GPU mailing list. If you do, be ready to provide extensive information about your setup and try git packages.

Where can I find this mailing list ? I found some intel mailing list but I am not sure if it is the right one.
Maybe this one?  http://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/intel-gfx
