Have a machine lying around and would like to test out AL..
AMD K6-2 is i586, right?
so no chance for AL ??
or is there anyway to overcome it?

personally, I would simply download the boot floppy's and test for myself.
Generation-wise, i686 is "only" PentiumPro (i.e. older than Pentium II), so the K6-2 is certainly a younger generation (more like Pentium II comparable).
BUT the PentiumPro may have instructions that the K6-2 does not have.

i believe all k6's are i586. (except some very late chips).
arch does have an old unmaintained i586 port.

As I said, it depends if you talk about COMPLETE instruction compatibility or generation. In the same way no Athlon is P4 compatible, simply because no Athlon has SSE2. Only the Athlon64 has now SSE2. However, no one would argue that the latest Athlon's are an older generation than the latest P4's. (again, I'm not talking about the Athlon64's - and I know what I'm talking about - I have all 3 at my fingertips ;-) )

Speaking of which - did you ever save the modifications you made to the standard ABS tree and the release scripts ? So that somebody else could start from there ?

well i was going by peoples practicla experiences. while i know that some k6's would pass as i686 the simple fact is i have yet to hear of a single user/developer using the i686 arch on a k6 (and i think judd even has some very late generation k6's).
yes the current.db.tar.gz is in the i586 package tree so yes it can be net installed or maintianed by who ever has the time to do so. keep in mind though it is not an easy thing and i would definitely have pushed harder for setting i586 up in an easy,rational manner (i was dependent on the i686 abs and i some cases it was just as pain in the arse because only a few of the devs were being accomodating in comply with changes that would have facilitated an easier time building i586.
