Hello,
I have just installed Arch from scratch and am trying to set up X with an NVIDIA driver. I have the following setup:
Installed:
xorg-server
xorg-server-utils
xterm
xorg-xrandr
xorg-twm
xorg-clock
nvidia-utils
nvidia-libgl
My GPU is GeForce GTX 750 Ti. I downloaded the driver for 64-Linux from the Nvidia website, and installed it from a USB stick. I have a dual boot with Windows 7, and only one monitor.
I have tweaked many things, following other forum posts and the wikis, until I no longer got errors in my Xorg.0.log file:

However X still fails to start, I get a black screen, no TTYs are available, and after about 5 seconds my monitor goes to sleep. Here are some of the things I've tried:
blacklisting nouveau, vesa, and other unwanted drivers (despite being fairly certain I don't have them)
Adding
rcutree.rcu_idle_gp_delay=1
as a kernel parameter as per this advice .
Adding the 'nvidia' module directly to my mkinitcpio file
Checking to make sure my .xinitrc is not empty, as per this advice.
I also have nomodeset in my default Grub, since not doing so meant I couldn't see anything after booting.
I also notice that when installing the nvidia driver, it claims to be installing version 337.25, but on the Nvidia website, it calls the appropriate download version 340.24
I appreciate any help you may offer.

My GPU is GeForce GTX 750 Ti. I downloaded the driver for 64-Linux from the Nvidia website, and installed it from a USB stick. I have a dual boot with Windows 7, and only one monitor.
Why did you do this? Install it through pacman.
Also.. How the hell did you get on the Nvidia Wiki page avoiding the installation instructions ?

Reinstall arch and get the nvidia driver via pacman.

Hi Kartious.
I did indeed read the instructions at the Nvidia wiki page, but perhaps I misunderstood them: in step 2 of installation, it tells me to find the appropriate driver. According to the Nvidia website, this driver should be version 340.24. But in step 3 of installation, it gives some common examples of how to install it, such as
pacman -S nvidia-304xx
, but none of them are version 340xx. When I tried possible names such as
nvidia-340xx
, pacman couldn't find any such packages, so I just opted to get it from the nvidia website.
How can I find out the name of the driver I want, as per how it should be typed into pacman? Again, the specific driver I need is here.
The instructions for installation on the NVidia website say nothing of using pacman: Instructions
Many thanks

Reinstall ...
This is bad advice.
Britta, welcome to the forums. Arch is a rolling release, so version numbers change rapidly - more so than does the wiki. The nvidia package in the repos is currently at version 340.24. That is (almost certainly) the driver you should use.

Also the driver you downloaded should provide something to uninstall, maybe try --help on the installer binary to figure out.
(See something like e.g.: http://askubuntu.com/questions/219942/h … ia-drivers
Edit: I know it's Ubuntu, but in this case I think it doesn't matter since it's concerning a binary anyways...)
Good Luck

Greetings,
I've since uninstalled the Nvidia driver as per the instructions in rebootl's post. I made sure I did not have vesa, nouveau, or intel drivers. I then installed nvidia, nvidia-utils, and nvidia-libgl using pacman. I ran pacman -Syu. Still, I get the same problem: my Xorg file contains no errors, yet startx gives me a black screen, and my monitor goes to sleep after a few seconds.
Just in case if there are discrepancies between this log file, and the previous, I'm reposting it again:

I've never used NVIDIA, but have you followed the configuring section of the wiki page?
Also, if those xrandr commands at the bottom of your xinitrc are important, you'll want to revise it. Those commands will never execute the way it is written as the "exec xtern" on the third to last line terminates any further processing of that file.

Good catch, Trilby! I had added that in hopes to see if this was the same problem (and thus the same fix), but it turns out it's a problem specific to Optimus, which I don't have.
Unfortunately, fixing the file with or without those lines does not help. I still have no error messages in my Xorg.0.log, and a black screen with a sleeping monitor.
Offline
I would just start simple to try and get it working and then build around it. First off I would make back up of your ~/.xinitrc and create a new file just executing the DE / WM you have installed.

I now have simplified my .xinitrc file, so it looks like the simplest sample in the wiki . I made sure it's in the right directory (that being ~), and I ran mkinitcpio -p, pacman -Syu again, just to be certain everything's up to date. Still no errors in my Xorg.0.log, and a black screen. Any further suggestions? What else could I look at, if not xinitrc or the Xorg log file?

Okay that's great, can you post both of the files are they are now ?

The NVidia driver appears to be loading correctly so we know that's not the issue, do you have a special set up of some kind? I have never seen a xorg.conf file quite like yours before (and this is maybe out of ignorance).
I use a config file for my home PC as I use dual screen but for my laptop at work and other machines I have used with just one monitor has never really needed one.

Hmm... I have the same graphics card. I don't have any special configuration, but I do use the following kernel parameters:
rw nomodeset i915.modeset=0 nouveau.modeset=0
This disables kernel modesetting.
I don't have a blacklist.conf.
I think your .xinitrc needs to start a window manager like:
exec twm
or
exec openbox-session
Maybe you knew this but you don't need an xorg.conf, since Xorg automatically creates one. If you need special options, you can create files in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d directory. I have nothing relevant there in my config.
Also there is some problem with the nvidia driver and the framebuffer console which I think only affects UEFI installations for some bizarre reason. Is this a UEFI system? My guess is that this is the reason why you can't return to the console after launching X, though it doesn't explain why X itself isn't working.

No, xterm is fine for testing.

Definitely you don't need such a basic xorg.conf file.
But it seems your monitor is badly configured:
...
[ 596.800] (WW) NVIDIA(0): Unable to read EDID for display device CRT-0
...
[ 596.804] (II) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 640 x 480
[ 596.834] (WW) NVIDIA(0): Unable to get display device CRT-0's EDID; cannot compute DPI
[ 596.834] (WW) NVIDIA(0): from CRT-0's EDID.
[ 596.834] (==) NVIDIA(0): DPI set to (75, 75); computed from built-in default
...
[ 596.866] (II) NVIDIA(0): Built-in logo is bigger than the screen.
640 x 480 is a very bad resolution; the driver cannot even show its logo screen image.
What kind of monitor is it?
Offline
@ Kartious I have only one monitor and I don't think I'm trying to do anything fancy
@Baryon I already have rw and nomodeset, the other 2 kernel parameters changed nothing
@berbae I just tried regenerating my xorg.conf file, by running
Xorg :0 -configure
Here is the new xorg.conf file it gives me, which I moved to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d

However, rather telling is that running the Xorg configuration ended with an error. It said "Server terminated with error (2)" and it recommended I check my server settings. So to do that I ran
Xorg :0 -config /root/xorg.conf.new
which again caused my computer to crash to a black screen, and did some funny stuff with ACPI, like left my num lock light on even after I forcibly turned off my computer's power.
Here is the Xorg.0.log file from that run:

Please check your config if the mouse is still not
operational, as by default Xorg tries to autodetect
the protocol.

Britta, I think you don't need any xorg.conf file at all, especially if it shows such a basic form, without any special configuration option.
And you didn't answer: "What kind of monitor is it?", ie what is the monitor model? Is it an old CRT monitor?
After you last test, you got a 1024 x 768 resolution, but it is also pretty bad nowadays...

Hi berbae
My monitor is made by Dell, and it's VGA. It's dimensions are 37x30cm, which is nearly a 5:4 ratio. I have it plugged into the GPU, not the motherboard.
I removed my xorg.conf file. I also reinstalled xorg-server and xorg-server-utils, then ran ldconfig. When I run startx, I get the same problems, but now there is an error. Here is the code:

Unfortunately it seems it's now looking for the vesa module, which it didn't do before. As well, on the screen after the error, it said the following (which isn't in the log file)
xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to server: Connection refused
xinit: server error

More often than not I have seen this because of a driver problem.
Can you show us which Nvidia package you installed and how you did it ?
lspci -v | grep VGA
pacman -Qi <package>
And make sure KMS is disabled as this can cause issue with the propriety Nvidia driver

Never used this myself but maybe try to increase log verbosity to get more information, as per: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 8#p1243478

@Baryon: I have tried running Grub with i915.modeset=0 and nouveau.modeset=0. I always run with nomodeset. I have an integrated Intel CPU, but I've also already following thoses instructions and have run "install i915 /usr/bin/false" ... It's still not listed in my blacklist; do I need to manually add it there as well? I retried running the "install" commands above, and now it says it can't find i915 or intel_agp... that's good right?

Also @ Baryon, for the "potentially relevant section" below that, I deleted my vonfig files, as mentioned in the thread. Now all I'll got is 10-evdev and 10-quirks. However, I believe this is the reason I had created a conf file in the first place. Let me know if at any point you want me to put it back
