I haven't used vmware on linux so I dunno if it's a lot faster, but with my QEMU experience all harddrive activity is a lot slower in emulators... I installed FreeBSD in qemu once to make some screenshots of the freebsd install, it took forever compared to on real hardware...

Try Parallels Workstation..It's really fast and better than WMWare...

all kidding aside, I will probably give it a try. Their beta is free anyway..

Switch to full screen when installing any windows in a VM.
The windowed vga/textmode in a VM is a lot slower than the fullscreen textmode.
Once you have windows running, install vmware-tools and everything will run fine in windowed mode once directx takes over from textmode.
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Vmware is really fast when run in fullscreen mode- although it starts up slow, but this seems to be a GTK2 issue (already discussed here).
Parallels is surprisingly fast, very easy to set up, but all versions I've tried (including latest beta) fail to get focus of many USB devices when plugged in, even if manually modpdobing out loaded USB modules- in comparison VMware 5.51 works just fine.

At startup vmware tries to launch the core using different library combinations to avoid incompatible libraries. If you want to fix it, just edit lib/vmware/lib/wrapper-gtk24.sh.

Thanks, I will give it a try.
And since my Vmware is installed "Arch-style" the above wrapper is in /opt/vmware/lib/lib instead.
