Missing Resolution for Desktop - XFCE4 - Dell Precision M3800

hey guys,

I have a Dell Precision M3800 with a crazy high ultra resolution of 3200x1800. Unfortunately that is too small to do me any good in XFCE4. So i wanted to use 1920x1080, but it is not an option. I did my research and found that i can use xrandr to get the job done. And i was able to do so, unfortunately it does not retain that resolution in  the settings after a reboot. I have also seen that i can add the same commands i used to get it working to startup, but i am not sure if that would affect monitors connected though my HDMI and DisplayPort.

So my questions are as follows:

1. Is there a way to hard code the custom resolution i want to always show up in the DISPLAY settings for the desktop without using xrandr?

2. If not, will adding the commands in the startup affect my other displays when connected. (when they are connected i do not use the laptop screen.)

Thanks

Have a look at http://www.randomshouting.com/2012/12/0 … ution.html

This will show you how to add a custom resolution to xorg.conf that your monitor supports but is not automatically recognised.

Alternatively, you can set a custom DPI and application font sizes in Xfce's appearance settings, desktop icon sizes in the desktop settings, panel sizes with the panel settings, and titlebar sizes in window manager settings.

To test a resolution cvt generated, I recommend using xrandr with mode switches (new; add to output; set). This will spare you time testing different xorg.conf files, then you can set the final resolution like Padfoot suggested.
