I started college recently, and I was pretty active on the screenshot threads up until my laptop conked out. I have a slick new machine, and some more good old BSPWM. If anyone is interested, my major is Computer Engineering.

GNOME 3.12. GTK theme is Numix, icons are Numix Circle, font is Cabin because Cantarell is gross. Major apps I use for stuff are Iceweasel for web browsing, Clementine for music playback (with integration into GNOME shell thanks to MPRIS2), X-Chat for IRC and all the stock GNOME apps for everything else. Trying to make things look sweet before school starts up for me next month and I won't have nearly as much time to devote to customization.

The artworks in my screens are an unofficial port of "Breeze" - the Plasma5 official one - for kde4.
Ofc, all credits to the original artists

The browser is just chromium, started in app mode ( chromium --app=http://url )

As for the icon theme and plasma i need to work on them a little bit. I can post a link later, once some issues are fixed.

You can make XFCE really pretty, I've done so before. Really what you want is a nice looking GTK theme, a nice icon theme, nice fonts, a pretty and fitting background and plenty of time to tweak things to how you want.

seems most people are not using a full DE, though.
Are there some resources online on *how* to do this. I am not a creative person; I'm lost in stuff like this. Mostly I am happy with basic stuff, but after seeing stuff on here, the XFCE default seems pretty boring

Just google for xfce themes. There's plenty of them available and setting them up are pretty straight forward. The thing is though, the people that tend to have the nicer looking desktops generally don't have an all in one kit they used. They found a theme for their environment, then an icon theme and perhaps even a set of fonts they found favorable. It takes some tinkering,

From what I've seen, I believe people with nice looking desktops are mostly using a window manager, no DE.

That's pretty much got the basics of theming covered. As an example to this, here's stock GNOME 3 compared to my customized GNOME 3. The big difference between the two is the GTK+ theme (numix-themes from the official repos), the icon theme (numix-circle-icon-theme-git from AUR) and the font used (Cabin from ttf-google-fonts-hg in AUR). Doing just that can make a big difference in the look of your desktop environment. It's possible to take customization even further than that if you so desire, by modifying the DE you're using or switching to only a WM and adding things onto that. That's a bit more complicated, but is worth it if you want something to look specifically the way you want.

Probably the biggest thing to remember though: this isn't Windows or OS X. You're using a very open operating system, and as such, you have full control over customizability.
