Xorg won't start with Nvidia Optimus on an MSI

I have an MSI laptop that has a hybrid graphics card. I followed the instructions on the Nvidia Optimus wiki.
When I type startx the Xorg server doesn't start.

Here is the relevant bit of the Xorg log file:

It appears not to be able to create the shared pixmap for the MSI WMI hotkeys.
I assume that is because Xorg doesn't have the required permission. Has anyone else has this problem?
Does anyone know which file Xorg doesn't have permission to write?
