[solved with reboot] xorg7: vesa vm86 syscall signal 11

I am trying to update a friends thinkpad R30 from a nearly 6month old arch install
after a pacman -Syufd
i think kernel and udev updates went okay (had to put irqpoll as a boot option (?) would that affect xorg7)
but xorg won't run

using xf86-video-trident (trident) and vesa for each
first tried using the old working config with modified paths: sig 11
then Xorg --configure, changed mouse line && X -config /root/xorg.conf.new: sig 11
added "Modes"  to the new config file, still sig 11

i can think of two problems: didn't explictly remove xorg before updateing, or a critical xorg package/module is missing

any ideas

the xorg log and config are on another computer, i can post them if they might help

thanks

You could check the xorg log for any error/warning messages. It will tell you if you're missing a package/module.

Re: [solved with reboot] xorg7: vesa vm86 syscall signal 11

thanks for the reply, no warnings only the error (sig 11)
however, after removing all the xorg stuff, putting it back and rebooting, it worked with vesa and trident

i did change depth modes, but i doubt that fixed it

thanks though
