Direct Login to X [solved]

Hi guys,

Forgive the "I can't find it myself" stupid newbie question, but I'm getting frustrated.

What is the reccommended way to log in directly to X? No slim, gdm, whatever. Just power on --> X. I used to use xinit.service.

Combine these together and I'm guessing that's what you are looking for.

I'm not sure it is Cyrusm.  That is a distinct path to a similar end goal, so it may work well for scrawler.  But one can also boot directly into graphical.target without a display manager which is the OP's goal (xinit.service does seem to be gone).

ah good to know! I'm still not very experienced with everything systemd has to offer, so I learn something new every day. Too many years using SysVinit I guess.

Combine these together and I'm guessing that's what you are looking for.

I had the same problem as mentioned in the first post (was booting directly to X but had xinit break) and can confirm that following those two wiki links did get things going again

Phew, what a hassle. I have used "start X at login" method in the past, but I also needed "automatic login to Virtual Console".  Doing it this way seems a little bit slower than with the xinit.service method, but it works.

Thanks everybody.  (btw, I did search all over the wiki, I just missed what I needed )

This isn't really "Arch Discussion" material as it's troublshooting.  Moving to Newbie Corner as that seems fitting - not as a statement that it is a "noobish" oversight, but just that the end solution turned out to be pretty basic.
