unable to start gdm many times without switching to other terminals

After I installed arch, first thing was to get a gui, I installed X and gnome3.
I then enabled gdm service as suggested in wiki.
Now I have this problem, when I start my laptop, gdm rarely starts, else I get a blank screen .

However I am still able to switch/login to other terminals (alt + ctrl + f2/3). After some switching,  when I switch back to gdm one (alt + ctrl + f1) I get the login screen and everything is normal ( except a few problems such as gnome on wayland, gnome-terminal do not work).

Notes:
When I run

systemctrl status gdm

in other terminals, I get

(II) AIGLX: Suspending AIGLX client for VT switch

I dont get it after gdm has started

I also get these warnings, which I think are ok-

Using new definition
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
>Warning: Compat map for group 2 redefined
> Using new definition
> Warning: Compat map for group 3 redefined
> Using new definition
> Warning: Compat map for group 4 redefined
> Using new definition
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server

Re: unable to start gdm many times without switching to other terminals

I have tried every other thing one forums, but gdm/gnome start only once/twice in a day. This is really bothering me as I cant live with any other desktop environment.

Re: unable to start gdm many times without switching to other terminals

Surely you can launch GNOME using another Display Manager like LXDM or LightDM?

Looks like a problem with your graphics driver to me. Maybe related to this ?:

Re: unable to start gdm many times without switching to other terminals

@clfarron4 I can launch KDE/kdm, enlightenment, SLiM, even just X. If I choose gnome from kdm/slim/lightdm it still crashes.

@Varg switching to uxa from sna hangs up all of the above

Re: unable to start gdm many times without switching to other terminals

@varun: Have you looked into downgrading the version of the Intel driver you're using? Have a look for the Arch Rollback Machine to downgrade if you don't have the packages in /var/cache/pacman/pkg/.

Re: unable to start gdm many times without switching to other terminals

I downgraded it to another version stored in that directory, still no luck sad
Maybe I should try a arch based distro ( Antergos ) that comes with gnome support

will it be same as arch + gnome 3.12 ?

No it won't be. They use their own repositories, with their own builds so things will be different to a straight Arch + GNOME 3.12.

Re: unable to start gdm many times without switching to other terminals

Is there any way I can find gnome/gdm logs, as my /var/log/gdm is always empty for some reason.

Also I get a very ugly/win98 like theme in firefox on KDE4, is it possible to make it gnome like?

Re: unable to start gdm many times without switching to other terminals

Maybe try to launch a gnome-session from a tty with the xinitrc file. Check the output in the tty.

For you second question: Styling GTK and Qt. In my opinion, qtcurve is the easiest way.

Re: unable to start gdm many times without switching to other terminals

@Varg thanks, now KDE looks much better big_smile
loading gnome-session through .xinitrc gives me a blank screen. However killing it from another tty gives me logs which contain no errors

these guys had similar problem
They solved it by applying those 6 patches.
How do apply them  on arch?

Re: unable to start gdm many times without switching to other terminals

Looks like you'll need to compile the X server from source to do that. I have no experience with it so I can't really help you.

Re: unable to start gdm many times without switching to other terminals

I think its useless, because after downgrading its still the same (except it cannot find some other drivers)...

Guys GNOME/GDM works everytime I boot with "nomodeset" option in my kernel. But the resolution is very very bad.

Is it a bug?

Re: unable to start gdm many times without switching to other terminals

Could be a bug.

The option "nomodeset" disables KMS (Kernel Mode Settigns), from what I've read in the wiki you need KMS to run X with the intel drivers.

Did you try the second option stated in wiki on the topic of X crashes/freezes ?

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Intel Graphics"
   Driver "intel"
   Option "DRI" "False"
EndSection

Seems like it disables dri, which is your problem according to the logs.

Re: unable to start gdm many times without switching to other terminals

that removes dri error (giving some other warnings), but doesent solve the present error. Also when I run X -configure, I get error like: number of displays does not match number of detected displays (and I cant find some real solution) , I thought since X, kde run fine It shouldny be a problem

I also have ubntu-gnome(3.12) on another partion and X -configure gives the same error but everything is OK
Is there a way can I understand how ubuntu configured/uses/gdm/drivers/X which I can apply to arch?

Most flavours of Ubuntu come with most of the Open Source/free drivers pre-installed, so it is probably the case that Ubuntu is using a different driver to the one you're using in ArchLinux.

Re: unable to start gdm many times without switching to other terminals

Allright, that's one problem down.

Now I don't have an Intel card but normally the open source drivers should auto detect most of the stuff without any configuration. The error about wrong display numbers may be related to incorrect configuration files. So I'll just give you some steps how I would do it.

First of all check if you have a  Xorg.conf file (This file is deprecated, /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ is used now) . If so rename it ( it should be located in /etc/X11/ ):

# mv Xorg.conf Xorg.conf-backup

This way, X won't pick up the file and you still have it as a back up in case it doesn't work.

Also check the folder /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ and do the same thing with the files inside it. ( except for 10-evdev.conf and 10-quirks.conf  ).

Don't run X - configure.

Start X with the xinitrc method, or maybe even reboot first, just in case smile

When the dri error shows up again, create the 20-intel.conf file again like in my previous post

Keep in mind that this also might be a gnome bug, since everything else runs fine.

I tried that, startx loads fine as well as KDE, but no luck with gdm (even after trying intel configuration file).

looks like a gnome bug sad

Re: unable to start gdm many times without switching to other terminals

sorry to bump this thread but after a fresh arch install and everything my Xog logs show no errors big_smile (I installed all packages in xorg group)
X loads fine!
but gnome (and also gdm crash)

starting gnome through xinitrc or directly xinit gnome session comepletey freezes my system (with cursor stuck on top left) and unable to switch b/n tty.
How can I find gnome logs?

Re: unable to start gdm many times without switching to other terminals

Installing all packages from the xorg group is a bad idea as you get a ton of graphic drivers you don't need and that may mess things up.

Re: unable to start gdm many times without switching to other terminals

I read this (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/wayland#GNOME) to run gnome on wayland.
However it says after install i should choose gnome on wayland from GDM
Any Idea how can I load gnome on wayland from terminal

I will then remove some video drivers that I dont need
