Catalyst works just fine, but I prefer the open variant for the better 2D performance.
There are no unusual errors in the log. I'm trying to start just with TWM, xclock, and xterm.
When I try to start X as root, it hangs at a black screen instead of crashing.
Weston has a corrupted screen when I try to start it, so I can't use Wayland as an alternative either.
I am using the linux-mainline kernel (3.16 RC7), although I have tried with 3.15.7 as well.
This is on a new install.
Here is the log: http://pastebin.com/RS0cGwwV

Did you try the other port, DVI-0? Is fglrx blacklisted and radeon loaded and KMS set (it is enabled according to the log)? You have several 'module does not exist' errors in the log.

Yes. I have a CRT connected to it with a VGA adapter. I unplugged it this attempt thinking that would make it work. Same result.
Also, fglrx isn't blacklisted, but I don't have it installed.

The same thing happens in Debian Sid and Fedora Rawhide (black screen). When I try with Debian stable, Gnome pops up and says that my graphics driver doesn't support running Gnome 3.

iwasaperson ,
there have been some reports where radeon didn't work with kernel 3.15.x , but did work with 3.14.x .
The cause seemed to be a bios/uefi setting called OSC that's related to powersaving for laptops.
If Debian sid and Fedora Rawhide are also using 3.15.x or later kernels, try linux-lts which is at 3.14.15 now.
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Thank you. I'll compile it and get back. It's weird because it worked just fine on my 6970 on 3.15.

no need to compile linux-lts, it's in the official repos.
you'll have to add an entry in your bootloader for linux-lts though.

It works, but only as root, and I have to do a specific set of things to get it to start.
1. Login as regular user
2. Attempt to start X and let it fail
3. Log out and log in as root
4. Attempt to start X with 'exec gnome-shell' in .xinitrc and let it fail
5. Comment out 'exec gnome-shell' and start X again, letting it fail
6. Uncomment 'exec gnome-shell' and start X, and Gnome starts successfully.

iwasaperson,
those needed actions suggest the problem MIGHT be related to gnome.
Please try starting X with another WM/DE.

When I login as the regular user and it fails, I'm using TWM.
Also, GDM makes the computer boot to a black screen.
EDIT: Lxqt works.
