Last upgrade - everything broken [everything solved]

Hi

I just upgraded my system today - and it broke a lot. I've just spent 3 hours fixing the things that I could. But these problems persist.

1: Azureus doesn't find the torrentfiles of the files that I was downloading before the upgrade. It says that there are no torrent files in .Azureus/torrents - but I checked they are all there.

2: Firefox crashes, doesn't display my installed extensions, doesn't save my settings when I quit and have a really small font (very annoying)

3: Installed xorg7 and the i810 driver. But now some of my gnome applets are broke. When I log into gnome it says "Encounted a problem while loading. OAFIID:Gnome_showDesktopApplet" - and some others. Is this due to xorg7? I would like my showdesktop and stickynotes applets back.

4: I have arch installed on my laptop and usually just plug in a mouse so I don't have to use the touchpad - this doesn't work anymore and I'm stuck with this stupid pad.

This was my worst upgrade ever. Could someone please advise - and sorry for the bad english.

If you have an USB mouse, try plugging it after system startup.

I have the same problem on my laptop (don't know what's fscked, but on my desktop the same mouse is always detected correctly at bootup).

Can't help with the rest - good luck !

Re: Last upgrade - everything broken [everything solved]

I fixed Azureus just by removing the torrents and adding them again - not such a big problem  smile

Libxres fixed my applets - don't know how but it did .. thanks for that.

FireFox is still very strange. I read the other thread about the tiny fonts but the advise didn't help me. My extensions is also still gone - even though they are in my /home/user/.mozilla dir. Did firefox change dir or something?

My mouse is still giving me problems. It is a usb mouse and when I plug it in it lights up - but it doesn't work. Should I add another mouse in xorg.conf or how? Has that changed in xorg7?

Thank you all for you help - and thanks for the compliment concerning my english.

Re: Last upgrade - everything broken [everything solved]

what is the mouse input device section of xorg.conf? I'm guessing the mouse problem is related to the udev update (module not loaded, perhaps) rather than xorg.

Re: Last upgrade - everything broken [everything solved]

My mouse section looks like this:

Section "InputDevice"

# Identifier and driver

    Identifier "Mouse1"
    Driver "mouse"
    Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
    Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
    Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

# Mouse-speed setting for PS/2 mouse.

# Option "Resolution" "256"

# When using XQUEUE, comment out the above two lines, and uncomment
# the following line.

# Option "Protocol" "Xqueue"

# Baudrate and SampleRate are only for some Logitech mice. In
# almost every case these lines should be omitted.

# Option "BaudRate" "9600"
# Option "SampleRate" "150"

# Emulate3Buttons is an option for 2-button Microsoft mice
# Emulate3Timeout is the timeout in milliseconds (default is 50ms)

# Option "Emulate3Buttons"
# Option "Emulate3Timeout" "50"

# ChordMiddle is an option for some 3-button Logitech mice

# Option "ChordMiddle"

EndSection

In my /dev/input/ I also have a mouse0 and mouse1. What would be the name of the module for the usb mouse?

Thanks for the very speed answer  big_smile

Re: Last upgrade - everything broken [everything solved]

Try /dev/input/mice. This node matches every mouse device.

Re: Last upgrade - everything broken [everything solved]

I am already using /dev/input/mice in xorg.conf - and that is also why I find it strange that the usb mouse stopped working.

Re: Last upgrade - everything broken [everything solved]

From time to time I have a dead mouse after starting up the system, too. Replugin it helps for me, but it is still strange, as the system is not changed, so the boot process should every time be the same. After nearly 30 % of boot processes I have to replug the mouse, wired.

Re: Last upgrade - everything broken [everything solved]

Tried replugging the mouse, tried every usb port, tried to have it unplugged when booting but nothing seems to work. I think I am missing something here. The usb mouse never gave me problems in the past (not a single time) but after this upgrade is just stopped working. Something must have changed in one of the things that I updated (xorg7, udev, kernel or something).

For the small fonts in firefox try installing font-bh-ttf and ttf-bitstream-vera

Does cat /dev/input/mice give you any output while moving the mouse?

Re: Last upgrade - everything broken [everything solved]

The font-bh-ttf package gave me my old firefox font back - thanks big_smile Now I just have to figure out why my extensions disappeared.

cat /dev/input/mice doesn't give an output when moving the usb mouse but it does when I move the mouse with the touchpad. What does this mean? I also tried the usbmouse with an knoppix cd just to see if it still worked and it worked fine.

Re: Last upgrade - everything broken [everything solved]

Found out that the reason the extensions in firefox was gone was because of the extensions having maxVersion 1.5 or similar in the install.rdf files. So I fixed the important ones and are just going to reinstall the others (themes and stuff).

Now I only have the mouse problem left

Edit [Mouse problem solved]: Why the hell isn't the usbhid module loaded when plugging in the usb mouse - and why isn't it loaded at boot? What changed?? Okay -

modprobe usbhid

fixed the mouseproblem.  big_smile
