Hey!
Slight problem: I have an old 256 GB SSD Drive I had my old install on, now I'd like to get some files from that, so I can erase the install and use it as a external drive. I've got a SATA to usb cable, with which I hook the drive to my laptop, but the laptop doesn't recognize the drive.
Several observations:
- Sometimes I get a "bad filesystem" type error
- Somestimes it mounts for 2 seconds before vanishing
- Most of the time nothing happens (it doesn't appear under /dev/sd* and can't be found by fsck)
My problem is: I have no idea how to go about troubleshooting this error. So I need suggestions/links on how to get more info and where to look for the drive!
If you need any more Information, just tell me!
Heres my journalctl output:

does the usb-sata cable work with other drives? Looking at your logs, my first guess would be a bad cable or connection.

Yeah; your hardware seems buggy; and that has already corrupted the drive: "499427397 extends beyond EOD, truncated"; meaning your partition is currently larger then the disks; which is obviously wrong. That will probably cause the "bad fs" errors

Nope, I haven't tested the cable with other drives, since I don't have other drives... ![]()
But its a new one, so it should work. Well I'll look into that and try it with another cable. Thanks!

Make sure that that the sata connector is properly connected.
I had borrowed some cheap usb-sata/ide cable recently, and had some issues at first simply because the power and sata cables included in the kit didn't seem to fit next to each other on the disk, and the sata cable wasn't properly in place because of that.

Try the drive & cables on your desktop machine too. It's not uncommon for certain laptops to have issues with specific devices on-board. My best example is that every single Acer laptop I've had has a shoddy power port. Eventually, after plugging and unplugging the laptop a few dozen times, the port becomes loose and eventually fails. Thus I can no longer use my power cable but instead have to use a battery and, well, that kind of dies fast. ![]()
Just some friendly advice. Also try different USB ports on the laptop! My example may apply to your laptop's own ports.

AS others memebers said, try with other USB port and other cable.
I already had a problem like that, try to put your disk in the freezer about 2 hours and plugin the disk into your computer, he should mount
(not the fridge)

Tried with a new connection, now it works. Damn, a new connector that doesn't work ![]()
