xgl - success stories?

xgl thread is now very long and mostly about making it work...

I am interested what configurations have people who were able to run it...

Can you write what is your video card, what kind of driver (anyone with DRI?), how much memory do you have, what kind of cpu and how fast everything works?

Re: xgl - success stories?

That would be great. If anyone did manage to build a somewhat stable Xgl system, please post how you did it and how it feels like.
I'd be especially interested in nvidia+kde stuff.

Re: xgl - success stories?

I just this min got everything installed. I used FoPref's binaries (which were build from Mikos' PKGBUILD's).

I had some trouble with the nvidia drivers and XGL playing together, but a reinstall of both fixed that problem.

I have two Nvidia MMX 440's (1 AGP, 1 PCI), XGL doesn't seem to play nice with my xinerama setup. I had to have only the one AGP card with a 800x600 display to get XGL to run at a acceptable speed (not being run in a window that is).

As XGL get's more mature, I think it will be time for a graphic's card upgrade tongue

Re: xgl - success stories?

I got it running with no problem on a Pentium M 1.7Ghz with 1 gig of ram, ATI Radeon Mobility 9600 (r350 m10) using the fglrx driver and definitely with dri enabled.

It's spiffy... but I like Ion3 too much.

Re: xgl - success stories?

I also got it working, AMD64 2800+, 512kb ram, ATI Radeon 9600XT with working fglrx. I used Mikos' pkgbuilds. I didn't really encounter any problems.

Re: xgl - success stories?

works for me. i'm on an AthlonXP 1700+ 320 Mb RAM, GeForce2 MX. compiled everything from CVS. think i had to disable the composite extension in xorg.conf though..

as for getting xgl working with kde: I did not have any luck with compiz. glxcompmgr works to some extent. i get wobbly windows and shadows, but keyboard bindings for special effects (e.g. cube scale/expose) do not work.

is anyone to use the cube or expose plugins under KDE?

Re: xgl - success stories?

Mikos' PKGBUILDs worked great, though there were a few dependencies I needed to add.  Can't remember what they are right now except for maybe libxevie.  Everything is fast and so far has been rock solid.

I'm running an AthlonXP 2000, 512mb, Geforce 6200.  I guess XGL uses the 6200's pixel shaders since videos play very well in mplayer using -vo xv.  With a Geforce 4200 Ti on the same system I had to change it to -vo gl2 to get decent video performance.

One question though: in the standard X server if I ran glxinfo, it would say "direct rendering: Yes", but when using XGL it says "direct rendering: No".  Is this a limitation of XGL?

No, if your regular X server is direct rendering enabled so is XGL. It just doesn't show up in glxinfo.

Re: xgl - success stories?

Mikos' PKGBUILDs worked great here as well. Got it all compiled, up and running in less then an hour on an Athlon 2400+ XP w/ Radeon 9700 with fglrx.

Runs nice and surprisingly quick. I ran glxgears and the framerate went up by about 1500 from the usual.

Some weirdness though. VLC runs fine but does not show window borders/titlebar. Config windows can't be dragged by the titlebar (and have no close/max/min buttons). Smooth scrolling in Mozilla is slow. Theme changer crashes on any changes, http://en.opensuse.org/Compiz#Default_p … ortcutsbut works nontheless. The pager is all smudged, like 4 desktops into one. keyboard bindings for special effects (e.g. cube scale/expose)

What ARE the keyboard bindings for special effects (e.g. cube scale/expose) ?

EDIT: Found plugin shortcuts @ http://en.opensuse.org/Compiz#Default_p … _shortcuts

Also, running this thing with XFCE now and absolutely love it. All the keyboard shortcuts work, the only annoyances are the ones listed above.

Oh, and I love how non-responding windows get greyed out. Something they didn't show in the demos.

Re: xgl - success stories?

I got it to work on my computer--see profile for specs (it's the good one)--by using FoPref's prebuilt packages.  the only problem I have had with it is that UT2004 and Postal 2 (both have the ut2004 engine, so it may just be a problem with the engine and xgl) do not display correctly and are painfully slow.  Other than that, everything seems to work right.  Gnome looks GREAT with xgl...everything runs smoothly....the wobble and the cube are flawless (as well as the other effects)....I <3 xgl
I also found that after you install xgl, you need to change your mouse from Auto to something like ExplorerPS/2 to use your mouse wheel.

Option    "Protocol"    "Auto"

needs to be

Option    "Protocol"    "ExplorerPS/2"

EDIT: I forgot 1 other problem....my pager got shrunk into 1 box that is cut into 4 slices.  I will try to get a good screenshot incase I confused anyone with my description.

Re: xgl - success stories?

I finally got Xgl working on my laptop. I have a pentium M and an intel 855GM (i810 driver) graphics chip. Everything works great, but it's very slow and opengl apps are either very very slow or crash the server.

I think I remember something like that from the video, actually.  They purposefully "crashed" a program to make it turn grey.

Oh yes, and on a bit of an unrelated note, it there a tutorial for getting Xgl/Compiz up and running?  I searched the forums and came up with nothing.

Re: xgl - success stories?

Xgl worked nicely here. First, I've run a gnome desktop, later I run my xfce4+rox desktop (the one I use with 'vanilla xorg'). Worked nicely, BUT, the xfce4 graphical pager was deformed.

Another thing is that Quake3 runs SLOW, I get something around 35fps on it here with Xgl (against its 75fps with xorg7 only).

Those eyecandies are all pretty good, but still not *that* usable for me. heh

Re: xgl - success stories?

Ahhh, another thing. It would be nice if Xgl used my /etc/xorg.conf to read keyboard settings, etc.  lol
Ah! And when I scroll any page at Firefox, it scrolls slowly, like if it was at a low frame rate

Re: xgl - success stories?

I've gotten it working, but gnome is chucking a fit. It can't find about 90% of my icons, and the ones it can are from the default gnome theme.
The grey theme doesn't show up in the theme choser, and when i select a diff theme / icon set, theme choser explodes!

I've also got the 4 in one page problem, i assume pager hasn't been patched.

Anyone know what's wrong?

How did you get it to run with xfce4?
Its running good here with gnome.

The screen flickers a little bit if I move windows or so.

Re: xgl - success stories?

Father: This seems not to be related to Xgl for me but lacking /etc/profile.d/xorg.sh

----

I have two systems I tried it on:
My Athlon XP 1900 with a GF 4800. It had some bugs and was therefor unusable. It needed too much CPU, too.

My brother's Intel 2.4 Ghz HT with a GF 6600 Gt. It runs *very* well. Video playback is nice, even with some more movies playing. GL applications like Quake 3 or Enemy Territory work great. In Q3 (and for sure ET too) Shaders are missing. Xgl doesn't expose all these hardware extensions to client applications that aren't supported by mesa itself.

The desktop switcher panel applet doesn't work right. I think this is a "known bug" thing.

Re: xgl - success stories?

My icons magically appeared when i went to show someone Xgl.
Randomness is bad!

So thats all good, but opengl apps kick the bucket.
I ran totem and the visualisation is fscked. It appears intelaced with each line moved over to the right by X amount.
Xine just explodes when i try and use it.
I ran Darkplaces (opengl quake engine) and it just sat at a black screen. Apparently it was trying to grab a graphics context unsuccessfully.

I'm using the latest nvidia drivers, so I'm pretty confused.
I think im gonna wait till its more mainstream anyway.
Definitely kicks ass though!

Re: xgl - success stories?

I am quite satisfied with it.
runs pretty smooth. XV Video makes no problems.
Xine, mplayer..alls works fine.
cause the workbench changer don´t work anymore, I suggest to use gdesklets with the gnome-pager..this works.

only small issues:
- It doesn´t recognize the xkb and mosue settings from xorg.conf
I got my mousewheel running now, but can´t get the sidebuttons to work.
- wine applications don´t have borders. I heard that it is possible to run them
in xnest, but I have to figure out how.

So..if anyone knows how..?

Re: xgl - success stories?

@Father make shure u run xgl with all the correct options for your card. U sayd u have nvidia so make sure u add al the options for nvidia to the script that starts xgl.
I ran xgl without any options and opengl applications seem to crash. Running glxgears gives a blank window for 2 secs than the whole desktop crashes. So make shure u got xgl running right.

I got it running in xfce4(no problems, runs great) but gnome seems to be missing all icons and the menu is empty(no aplications at all).

Re: xgl - success stories?

Is there a package for XGL or is it at this point PKGBUILDs only?

Also, if there isn't a package, how long will it be until i can download an XGL package?

Can you use XGL with KDM or do you have to start X manually?

Sorry for all the questions...
