This is the machine that I have:

I'd like to put arch on it. The wiki has the following tutorials:

Which would you recommend?
[edit]
It's a 64 bit machine.

I don't really understand the purpose of those guides. You can follow up with them post-install for configuration of various elements, but unless you're installing on a toaster or cheese grater, use the installation guide or beginner's guide.

I have a 2011 macbook pro, or the 8.2 model. You can do just fine by following the beginners guide.

Stupid question. How do you select -- in a Mac -- from which media to boot from? How would you get into BIOS?

Hey,
if i'm not mistaken you press the left alt key , right next to the cmd key.
I don't know how to get into the bios and i do not believe you can select an os to boot by default other than windows and mac os x, after you install grub it should be defaulted by efibootmgr but if you tell mac os x you'd rather boot from it you'll have to re bless grub :

if all this crap is too much for you, you can always go for refind which is really easy to install and remove. just google refind and install it in mac os x, uninstalling it is as easy as deleting it from the /EFI folder on the mac os x partition if i'm not mistaken.
