Logitech usb headset not usable is some apps

The device works fine in some apps (skype) but not in others (xlite, kiax, audacity). In the apps that it doesn't work you only see the default sound card /dev/dsp. There are no entries for /dev/dsp1 or /dev/dsp2. Very strange. It's not the headset because it works fine on another computer running Kanotix.
cat /proc/asound/cards shows the following:
0 [SI7012         ]: ICH - SiS SI7012
                     SiS SI7012 with ALC655 at 0xe000, irq 19
1 [UART           ]: MPU-401 UART - MPU-401 UART
                     MPU-401 UART at 0x330, irq 10
2 [Headset        ]: USB-Audio - Logitech USB Headset
                     Logitech Logitech USB Headset at usb-0000:00:03.1-1, full speed
