Asus Motherboard with NVIDIA GeForce 6150 + nForce 430

Hi Guys,

Was just wondering if anybody could help me out a bit regarding buying a new motherboard.

I was looking at getting the Asus A8N-VM CSM motherboard which has the NVIDIA GeForce 6150 + nForce 430 chipset.

Would anybody have any views on using ArchLinux with this board.

Or would I be better off choosing something with a VIA or SIS or ATI chipset.

The reason I like this board is coz :
1) It has On-board graphics
2) There is an official driver with full 3d support

I guess I was looking to hear from people who already have this board or have any experience with installing linux ( actually mainly looking at ArchLinux ) and if there are any gotchas that should serve as showstoppers or the like.

As always, your advice will be greatly appreciated ...

THNX in advance.

Cheers,

hackmykack

The main problem I see is the onboard graphics.  Then again, since it's an Nvidia based board, check their site and see if their Linux drivers support the onboard video.

Hey johnisevil,

Thnx for that.

Just checked out the nvidia site and the Geforce 6150 is listed as supported. So hopefully that should be fine.

I was more worried about the other things such as audio, lan, chipset etc.

Would you have any experience (or anyone for that matter) with installing linux on a board with this chipset.

Cheers,

It's not so much Linux specific, but I've read a fair amount of reviews with people complaining of problems with these newer micro-ATX Nvidia based boards.  Personally, I'd recommend against them as you can get a fairly cheap motherboard/video card combo that will work much better.

I don't know about the built in graphics support, but my chaintech motherboard with a nforce4 chipset works perfectly with linux. I don't even have to use nvidia's drivers. I just use the drivers in the kernel. Although I do use the nvidia drivers for my pci express geforce 6200.

Re: Asus Motherboard with NVIDIA GeForce 6150 + nForce 430

Hey johnisevil & jftaylor21,

Thnx for that again ....

Have been reading a bit more about the boards with the Nvidia Geforce 6100 / 6150 chipsets and I have to agree ... they seem to be more trouble than they are worth.

jftaylor21 :

Would you mind giving me the Model of your board since you seem to have everything working by default or is it that practically any board with that chipset will work just fine.

Cheers,

Re: Asus Motherboard with NVIDIA GeForce 6150 + nForce 430

With the system I'm using, everything works perfectly as well.  Here are the specs of my main desktop system:

CPU: Athlon 64 X2 4400
Motherboard: ASUS A8N5X
Graphics card: Geforce 6600
Storage: 2 80gb Maxtor SATA drives (in RAID1)

Those are the main parts of interest.

Re: Asus Motherboard with NVIDIA GeForce 6150 + nForce 430

I'm going to buy ASUS A8N-VM (another choice was ASRock 939NF4G-SATA2, which is cheeper by 6$ but has 24 months warranty instead of 36 for ASUS).
As I understand this motherboard works with standard kernel modules.
So what benefits are from installing nforce package from [extra]?
AFAIK nvsound supports OSS only, for ALSA snd-intel8x0 is needed, other devices are supported by vanilla kernel. So why should I install nforce package?
If someone used nforce-based motherboards - please tell me what the difference between using standard kernel modules and nforce driver from Nvidia.
