Extraordinary Wifi problems with Wifi card rtl8188ee

I am having the worst problems with my wifi.  Any problem that can happen with wifi networking is happening and has happened.  The networking goes in and out (sometimes randomly losing the connection), the hardware switch on my laptop can turn the wifi off but can't turn the wifi on again (the only solution I have found is to boot into Windows and then return to my Arch.  Weird....).  Also, the networking is quite slow compared to my wifi speed on Windows.  I've also noticed I can't really run more than one program that uses the network at once (can't use Dropbox and Firefox at the same time).  Sometimes when I boot up, there is no connection at all (takes several boots to get a connection).
The card is an rtl8188ee, which from my preliminary research seems to be notorious for having issues (it works flawlessly on Windows, though).  I remember my wifi working pretty much flawlessly on Ubuntu (Ubuntu 13.10) before I switched to Arch.

Any help would be appreciated.
For starters, here's the readout from my iwconfig:

And here's the readout from lsmod, if that's helpful:

From what I can tell, I think this is an issue with the kernel module, not NetworkManager (I've tried cleaning the config for this already).

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me or point me in the right direction.

Re: Extraordinary Wifi problems with Wifi card rtl8188ee

What kernel are you using? I had a similar problem with the 3.14.6-1-ARCH kernel (the Wifi for me didn't work at all during or after the installation). I solved the problem using this guide but using the backports from the latest stable release (check here). Keep in mind the difference in packages name (in Arch you need to install linux-headers and base-devel).

Re: Extraordinary Wifi problems with Wifi card rtl8188ee

According to uname, I'm using 3.15.3-1-ARCH.  Does this make a difference?  I'll go ahead and try the guide and see if it makes a difference.  Thank you for the response!

Re: Extraordinary Wifi problems with Wifi card rtl8188ee

Thank you for your suggestion, but it looks like I'm already using the latest stable kernel.

Re: Extraordinary Wifi problems with Wifi card rtl8188ee

According to the packages list, the latest stable version is 3.15.4. If I were you, I would try to update and see if the problem persist. If that's the case, if you can, try using the backports from 3.16 RC. By the way this is strange, I used the 3.15.1 backports and they worked flawlessly, so I can't explain why you're having problems using the kernel I picked the backports from. Also, I switched to Arch because with Ubuntu 14.04 the WiFi performance was terrible.

From what I can tell, I think this is an issue with the kernel module

Me too.
EDIT:
I forgot something: after you've followed the guide, check the interface name. I've just remembered that after following that guide, the interface name changed so I had to properly set the interface name in my netowrk manager (in my case Wicd).

Re: Extraordinary Wifi problems with Wifi card rtl8188ee

Huh.  I updated, then went to speedtest.net, and I got the fastest speed reading I've ever seen on my network.  I've decided that speedtest.net isn't an accurate way to benchmark internet speed (it doesn't select servers for the test very well).  I also don't remember it ever going in and out with the 3.15 kernel (it hasn't happened recently), maybe that was just a 3.14 issue.  That leaves the problem of the hardware switch on my computer not handling my wifi card very well, but that might beyond the scope of the other issues.  If you don't have any suggestions for that, I might as well mark this as solved (I can avoid using the hardware switch).

Re: Extraordinary Wifi problems with Wifi card rtl8188ee

I tried the 3.16-rc-1 backports...
It seems better, but it still acts up...

I continually get this in dmesg (with the backport, while connected to a network):

Re: Extraordinary Wifi problems with Wifi card rtl8188ee

I'm getting these errors too.  I'm using the latest stable kernel (3.15.4-1 ARCH).  The funny thing is, I don't remember this being an issue when I used Ubuntu 13.10 (which used kernel 3.11).  Is this a clue to anything?  Should we file a bug report to the kernel developers regarding the current kernel?  It's really annoying.  Download speed doesn't seem to be affected greatly, but some websites take forever to load (Gmail is an example), and it doesn't really work to have more than one tab trying to load.  Actually, now that I think about it, I think I used the liquorix kernel with Ubuntu (I don't remember which version though).

Re: Extraordinary Wifi problems with Wifi card rtl8188ee

I definitely think we should file a bug report to the kernel developers.
I've only had this laptop for a little over a week but this eventually annoyed me so much that I swapped out the Realtek chip with a Qualcomm Atheros AR9287 Wireless Network Adapter.
I don't plan on keeping the Realtek chip out of the laptop forever, because I'm pretty sure that only having one wire (out of two) connected to the Atheros chip isn't helping signal strength.

Have you ever filed a bug report to the kernel developers? I haven't, so I'm unfamiliar with the process.
Guess there's always a time for me to learn though...

Re: Extraordinary Wifi problems with Wifi card rtl8188ee

I'm embarrassed to admit, I've never filed a bug report of any kind to anyone.  I suppose this guide could be a start: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bug_report  And yeah, this is definitely a bug.  I've tinkered with NetworkManager and wicd and a zillion other things, leaving the kernel as the only possible cause for the problems.  Would the report need to go to the Arch kernel developers or to the kernel.org developers?  This thread should definitely be moved to Kernel/Hardware issues.

Yeah so my experience around half a year ago moving from Ubuntu 12.04 with the 8188ee was that it actually worked great at first, in the older kernel I had to manually install the drivers to recognize the card but it was recognized and worked right off the bat. It worked superbly for a few months, then issues started happening. It would disconnect and reconnect, so no big deal. I am kind of a wifi deadzone of my house, but the connection would always rate pretty strong. About a month ago it got worse, I would get deauthentication messages in dmesg, it would normally be similar messages each time. As of recently I get just about every deauth message there is it seems. Its no longer just "reason 3" it will be like "deauthenticated from 00:26:62:7d:2e:68 (Reason: 6=CLASS2_FRAME_FROM_NONAUTH_STA)". I'll have to toggle the wifi on off in NetworkManager to recover after the disconnects which occur more and more frequently.

This has been driving me bonkers. I've never done bug reports or anything either, most things I chalk up to user error and figure problems are on my end. I just remembered I have another wifi card so I'm just going to switch them and see what happens. Glad I'm not the only one experiencing this. I was considering a reinstall, but don't really want to dedicate that much time to it right now.

I also got a lot of "(Reason: 2=PREV_AUTH_NOT_VALID)"

Yeah, I get those errors too.

As soon as I can wrap my head around that wiki page, I'll file a bug report...

Edit : It may not actually be necessary. [1]
However, it describes a different issue entirely, at first (not being able to connect to a network with a RTL8188EE) instead of constantly disconnecting, slow speeds, etc.

Re: Extraordinary Wifi problems with Wifi card rtl8188ee

I'm having the same issue. Connection drops speed and I need to do a reconect via NetworkManager or wait for a 30seconds to revive data transfer.

No progress with this? I have the same wifi and although it never really disconnects, its extremely slow. I never get more than 300kbps, and skype calls are pure lag.

Yeah, there doesn't seem to be any good workarounds for these problems.  It's a kernel issue.  I recommend you send your complaints to the kernel developer (see Yomi's post).  I don't have extremely slow download speed, but I do have extremely slow upload speed (I haven't tried Skype yet).

Re: Extraordinary Wifi problems with Wifi card rtl8188ee

Hi, I am having exactly the same issue. I tinkered with NetworkManager and wicd without much success. A few minutes ago I updated to the newest 3.15.8-1-ARCH which according to the tests I've been running seems to have improved the results on speedtest.net.

The WIFI works fine on a live MINT.

I am considering installation of the proprietary driver as described in the following urls: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2162026 and here http://askubuntu.com/questions/475489/w … 188ee-card
Has anyone tried that?

ps for disabling/enabling the wifi you might find rfkill useful

Re: Extraordinary Wifi problems with Wifi card rtl8188ee

Yep. Same story here.  I've tinkered with wicd and NetworkManager as well, leaving the kernel as the problem.  As for the wireless working fine on a live Linux Mint, that might make sense.  My laptop used to run Ubuntu 13.10, and I don't remember having any problems.  I personally haven't tried installing the driver from Realtek.  Installing that driver is explained in the second link you posted.  Speedtest.net doesn't give me consistent results (one run will be significantly faster or slower than another), but I haven't found anything better yet.

Hmm, I just noticed that on the second link mmstick commented that his wifi works with Arch (via being configured with netctl) but not on Ubuntu (he claims NetworkManager causes issues with a lot of chips).  I'm still holding to my hypothesis that this issue is from the kernel.
Give the proprietary Realtek driver a try, and let us know if it works for you (I'll give it a try once I get around to it).

Re: Extraordinary Wifi problems with Wifi card rtl8188ee

Run into multiple compilation errors and searched the web for help. After resolving some of the errors I found this:
https://github.com/FreedomBen/rtl8188ce-linux-driver

I put my trust to it and it did the entire job for me. Unfortunately, with the new driver my wifi card behaves the same way. It's fairly random, but in most cases very slow.

Re: Extraordinary Wifi problems with Wifi card rtl8188ee

I have the same wifi card, it works fine on windows, but on linux , I get a huge amount of packet loss and its almost unusable. This is keeping me from switching to linux. This bug is also not just an arch linux problem, I think all distros are having this problem.

If it works on Windows, it may be possible to use ndiswrapper to use Windows' drivers:

Re: Extraordinary Wifi problems with Wifi card rtl8188ee

Jean3799, as I mentioned before, I did not have the issue on Linux Mint. Neither the author had the issue on Ubuntu. It could be that this issue is specific to Arch unfortunately. You might try other distro, otherwise Linux will be hurt ....

Pse, I installed proprietary drivers from realtek and it did not repair the issue. Moreover, I believe that Mint uses exactly the same drivers for the wifi card and it did not have the issue. There's a chance then that using ndiswrapper would not help. However, if anyone tries it, please let us know.

My wifi seems to be working a lot better with kernel 3.16.1-1-ARCH.  Is it working for anyone else?

I'm quite glad that this problem has been resolved.  Should we go ahead and mark it as solved?
